Director of Grants
Overview
Houston Arts Alliance (HAA) is seeking a Director of Grants to lead the distribution of approximately $15 million in public funding for the arts each year through its contract with the City of Houston Mayor’s Office of the Arts.
About the Role
The Director will lead the Grants team and oversee the systems and processes that support fair, transparent, equitable, and responsive grantmaking across Houston’s diverse arts and cultural community. The role combines team leadership, grantmaking strategy, systems improvement, relationship building, and public representation.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development and implementation of grantmaking strategies that align with HAA’s mission and priorities.
- Oversee the evaluation and selection of grant proposals to ensure fairness, transparency, and responsiveness.
- Manage the grantmaking process, including proposal review, budgeting, and awarding funds.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with grantees, partners, and other stakeholders to foster collaboration and mutual understanding.
- Advocate for equitable access to funding opportunities and support for underrepresented communities within the arts and cultural sector.
- Collaborate with the CEO and other senior staff to develop and implement systems improvements that enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
- Represent HAA externally at various events and meetings to promote the organization and its grant programs.
Requirements
- Experience in grantmaking, philanthropy, the arts, or cultural nonprofits.
- Strong leadership skills and ability to manage complex systems.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Attention to detail and a solutions-oriented approach.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., arts administration, nonprofit management, social sciences).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in grantmaking, fundraising, or related field.
- Experience working with diverse communities and promoting equity.
- Knowledge of arts and cultural funding mechanisms and policies.
