Director of Field Construction Operations (Electrical and PLC Controls) - Irving, TX

TALNT Team · Irving, TX · 4 days ago
On-siteManagementFull-time

About the Role

This is the senior leader of the field construction organization. You own how the controls scope gets installed, started up, commissioned, and turned over on new construction projects, and you own the financial performance of that work. You lead a national field organization of control technicians, PLC technicians, technical project managers, field operations managers, and critical systems supervisors. You carry the field P&L, set the standards those crews execute to, build the bench that lets the business take on more work, and report to the VP of Operations. This is a builder's seat, not a caretaker's seat.

Responsibilities

  • Field Construction Execution:
    • Own installation, startup, and commissioning of the controls scope on new construction, from mobilization through turnover.
    • Standardize DDC and PLC commissioning practices across projects and field teams.
    • Plan field activity, manage schedules, drive risk mitigation, and resolve problems through installation, commissioning, and customer coordination.
    • Work with engineering to deploy the on-site systems, tools, and resources that make execution repeatable.
  • P&L and Financial Ownership:
    • Own the field operations P&L: labor cost, utilization, productivity, project margin, and the field operating budget.
    • Forecast field labor against pipeline and backlog, and staff to it.
    • Lead operational reviews on major projects and hold the organization to cost, schedule, and margin commitments.
    • Scale the field business alongside the Director of Operations toward $1B in revenue.
  • Leading Technical Teams:
    • Lead and develop field operations managers, critical systems supervisors, technical project managers, and control technicians at every level.
    • Hire, coach, and performance manage, including managing out when needed.
    • Build the training programs, field standards, and career paths that hold up while headcount grows.
    • Partner with DDC and PLC factory resources on the products and services that drive growth.

Requirements

  • You have led crews of PLC, electrical, or controls technicians, or the managers of those crews, through installation and commissioning on new construction.
  • You have carried a P&L or budget for a field, branch, service, or construction operation and answered for labor cost, utilization, and margin, not just schedule.
  • Engineering or electrical grounding deep enough to lead technical people: a degree, a journeyman or master electrician background, or equivalent hands-on controls and automation experience.
  • Working command of BMS, DDC, and PLC platforms, electrical systems, and construction turnover.
  • Ten or more years of relevant experience, with a current or recent director or senior manager seat over a field organization.
  • Willing to travel heavily to project sites and to work from the Irving, TX office when not traveling.

Nice to Have

  • Data center or mission-critical construction delivery: hyperscale, colocation, or enterprise.
  • Experience with Allen Bradley, Ignition SCADA, Delta DDC, or comparable platforms.
  • BMS, EPMS, or integrated systems commissioning.
  • Experience scaling a field organization through rapid growth.

Backgrounds That Fit

Controls and building automation integrators, electrical contractors, MEP contractors, electrical testing and commissioning firms, and critical power field service organizations. Titles like Director of Field Operations, Director of Construction, Operations Manager, General Manager, Electrical or MEP Construction Manager, and Senior Project Manager (Electrical or Controls) all fit.

What This Role Is Not

Running the day-to-day of live, already-built facilities is a different profile. This seat is about delivering scope into buildings while they are being built.

Compensation and Benefits

Competitive base salary plus annual bonus, full medical, dental, and vision, 401K with match, and all business travel covered with per diem.
