Position Summary

The Director of Fiber Splicing is responsible for leading and expanding Sunrise Telecom's fiber splicing operations across all company locations. This strategic leadership role will develop standardized splicing processes, establish and mentor high-performing splicing teams, create and implement a comprehensive training program, and serve as the company's primary technical authority for all fiber splicing operations. The Director will work closely with Operations, Business Development, Project Management, and Recruiting to ensure Sunrise has the technical expertise, workforce, and operational capabilities to support existing customers while positioning the company for future fiber opportunities nationwide.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute Sunrise Telecom's nationwide fiber splicing strategy.

  • Build, lead, and mentor fiber splicing teams across multiple office locations.

  • Establish standardized splicing procedures, quality standards, and best practices throughout the organization.

  • Design, implement, and continuously improve a comprehensive fiber splicing training and certification program for new and existing employees.

  • Serve as the company's subject matter expert (SME) for all fiber splicing operations.

  • Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support for field operations and project teams.

  • Evaluate current capabilities and identify staffing, equipment, and training needs to support company growth.

  • Partner with Recruiting to identify hiring needs, establish technical qualifications, and assist in interviewing key splicing personnel.

  • Work alongside Business Development during customer meetings, proposals, and new business opportunities by providing technical expertise.

  • Develop career progression paths and mentoring programs for Fiber Splicers and Fiber Splicing Supervisors.

  • Ensure compliance with customer specifications, company standards, and all applicable safety regulations.

  • Analyze project performance and implement continuous improvement initiatives to increase productivity, quality, and profitability.

  • Recommend new splicing technologies, equipment, and industry best practices.

  • Cook up with Operations leadership to ensure proper resource allocation across all active projects.

  • Conduct field visits, audits, and quality inspections to maintain operational excellence.

  • Assist in developing project estimates, labor forecasting, and operational budgets related to fiber splicing.

  • Build relationships with customers, vendors, and industry partners to strengthen Sunrise Telecom's fiber capabilities.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of fiber optic splicing experience in telecommunications.

  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing fiber splicing teams.

  • Extensive knowledge of:

    • Single-mode and multi-mode fiber networks
    • Fusion splicing techniques
    • Ribbon fiber splicing
    • Fiber testing and troubleshooting
    • OTDR testing
    • Power meter testing
    • Fiber characterization
    • Network acceptance testing
  • Experience building or managing large-scale fiber deployment projects.

  • Strong understanding of telecommunications construction practices and outside plant (OSP) fiber networks.

  • Demonstrated ability to create training programs and develop technical personnel.

  • Excellent leadership, coaching, and communication skills.

  • Ability to travel extensively to Sunrise office locations and project sites as needed.

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting multiple geographic regions or nationwide operations.

  • Experience working with major telecommunications providers such as Charter, Brightspeed, AT&T, Frontier, Comcast, or other national carriers.

  • Fiber optic certifications (FOA, Corning, AFL, Sumitomo, Fujikura, or equivalent).

  • Experience with fiber network design and engineering concepts.

  • Budget management and workforce planning experience.

  • Strong understanding of customer quality standards and acceptance requirements.

  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    • Expert knowledge of fiber optic construction and splicing operations.

    • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
    • Ability to effectively train, mentor, and develop technical employees.
    • Strong project planning and resource management skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and all levels of the organization.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and telecommunications documentation systems.
