Overview

We are looking for a Director of Software Architecture with deep, hands-on experience in solution and enterprise architecture, and a strong background in building and scaling eCommerce platforms. This role is for a seasoned technologist (10–15+ years) who loves designing systems that last — especially in high-scale, customer-facing, transaction-heavy environments. You will partner closely with engineering, product, and business leaders to architect and deliver resilient, scalable eCommerce and platform systems from conception through production. This is a true end-to-end role — from defining architectural vision to ensuring high-quality implementation in real-world systems.

Responsibilities

  • Own the architectural vision for eCommerce and core platforms, ensuring systems are scalable, secure, resilient, and built for long-term evolution.
  • Lead solution and enterprise architecture across the eCommerce ecosystem, including storefronts, checkout, payments, order management, inventory, pricing, promotions, and integrations.
  • Design end-to-end customer and operational flows, balancing performance, reliability, and business agility in high-volume transactional systems.
  • Partner deeply with engineering teams, guiding hands-on implementation and architectural execution.
  • Collaborate with product, merchandising, operations, and business leaders to translate eCommerce requirements into pragmatic technical solutions.
  • Define and evolve architectural standards and patterns for eCommerce and platform systems, including APIs, integrations, and data flows.
  • Guide technology decisions across cloud infrastructure, commerce platforms (custom or packaged), headless architectures, microservices, event-driven systems, and modern data stacks.
  • Ensure architectural integrity of implementations, reviewing designs, critical code paths, and production readiness.
  • Mentor senior engineers and architects, raising the bar for eCommerce system design and engineering excellence.
  • Drive alignment across teams, reducing complexity and enabling faster, safer delivery.

What Success Looks Like

  • eCommerce platforms that are fast, reliable, and resilient, even under peak demand.
  • Systems that scale with growth and adapt to new channels and experiences.
  • Architecture that enables rapid iteration without sacrificing stability.
  • Engineering teams that feel empowered, aligned, and supported.

Qualifications

  • 10–15+ years of experience in software engineering and architecture, with significant depth in solution and enterprise architecture.
  • Deep eCommerce domain expertise, including experience designing and scaling systems for:
    • High-traffic storefronts and headless commerce
    • Checkout, payments, and fraud
    • Order management, fulfillment, inventory, and returns
    • Pricing, promotions, and personalization
  • Proven experience with high-scale, high-availability, customer-facing systems.
  • Strong grounding in software architecture fundamentals: system design, design patterns, scalability, reliability, security, and performance.
  • Hands-on experience with modern architectures and technologies, including cloud-native platforms, microservices, event-driven systems, APIs, and modern data platforms.
  • Ability to connect eCommerce business goals (conversion, latency, reliability, growth) to architectural and technical decisions.
  • Experience working closely with engineering, product, and business teams to bring complex solutions to life.
  • Clear communicator who can translate complex architecture into practical decisions.
  • A builder's mindset — someone who cares deeply about implementation quality, not just design artifacts.
  • Passion for technology, learning, and craftsmanship.
