About the Role
The Director of Engineering and Technology provides hands-on leadership for a multidisciplinary engineering organization, leading mechanical, electrical, and software engineering functions while setting clear technical direction and long-term technology vision. This role defines and executes engineering strategy, technology roadmaps, and engineering projects, remaining actively engaged in day-to-day problem solving, coaching, and technical decision-making. The position ensures engineering solutions are reliable, scalable, and aligned with business and customer requirements, balancing practical execution with strategic leadership.
Responsibilities
- Drive new products and current product revisions quickly in a rapid development environment within the new product process.
- Coordinate research and development efforts from concept through production to deliver complete solutions for mechanical, electrical, and software engineering.
- Lead the creation, management, and execution of a new product pipeline aligned with long-term business strategy.
- Provide leadership and management of existing product maintenance and end-of-life (EoL) sustainment for product continuity and strategic growth.
- Accountable for the successful execution of all engineering projects and launch plans, including mechanical, electrical, and software components.
- Responsible for hand-off to operations, supporting commercial launch readiness, beta/pilot testing, and required documentation for technical and after-sales service support.
- Resolve issues between different groups at the director level.
- Maintain an accurate project status tracking system and report on performance at the engineering department level.
- Ensure optimal utilization of resources and recommend best practices to improve design, fit, form, function, and quality.
- Direct the implementation of ABM (ATS Business Model - Six Sigma, lean, and continuous improvement) projects as directed by the General Manager.
- Manage staff across all engineering areas (mechanical, electrical, software), including hiring, training, professional development, mentoring, and performance evaluation.
- Support and align with Commercial and Product Management functions to capture Voice of Customer (VoC) data through focus groups, surveys, beta sites, and site visits.
- Perform SWOT analysis on products, engineering initiatives, and strategic third-party suppliers as required.
- Establish and improve engineering SOPs and standards for product realization, lifecycle management, quality, and compliance.
- Prepare and track the annual budget for the engineering department.
- Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and standards to support the overall management system.
- Facilitate compliance with industry-specific regulatory requirements, laws, and corporate policies.
- Participate in Avidity Leadership Committee meetings and company strategic planning.
- Monitor industry trends and competitive landscape through trade shows, conferences, and publications.
- Manage and support company initiatives including ERP, ISO, and 5S.
- Ensure timely and effective role-based training for new and current employees on updated SOPs, policies, and work instructions.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 10–15 years of progressive product development and engineering experience, product management, or a combination of these areas.
Skills
- Ability to train, develop, and lead a multidisciplinary engineering team.
- Knowledge of standard manufacturing and business tools, including Microsoft Office.
- Understanding of compliance standards such as UL and CE.
- Proficiency in mechanical, electrical, and software engineering processes.
- Experience with research and development processes.
- In-depth industry knowledge and understanding of customer needs.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for business correspondence.
- Ability to learn quickly, work independently, and adapt to changing environments.
- Ability to articulate a customer value proposition for solutions.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting bid plans, blueprints, schematics, and facility drawings.
- Experience interfacing with customers and contractors.
- Project management skills to meet scheduled commitments and budgets.
- Ability to develop financial data and manage budgets.
- Strong technical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to translate technical product knowledge for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience developing, managing, and measuring business plans and strategies.
