About the role
A Director of Education and Professional Development designs and oversees learning strategies to upskill staff or association members. They lead curriculum development, manage training teams, monitor program effectiveness, ensure regulatory compliance, and align educational programming with overarching organizational goals. This position reports to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) with matrix to VP of Human Resources.
Responsibilities
- Strategic Planning: Collaborate with executive leadership to identify training needs and curate a roadmap for long-term organizational growth and continuous learning.
- Program Design & Management: Oversee the development and execution of instructional materials, certifications, webinars, live workshops, and online coursework.
- Team Leadership: Manage, train, and evaluate education and training staff, adjunct instructors, or instructional designers.
- Accreditation & Compliance: Maintain stringent quality standards, ensuring all continuing education (CE) credits or organizational training comply with licensing and regulatory boards (e.g., ACCME).
- Data Evaluation: Use learning management systems (LMS) and metrics to analyze program outcomes, gather learner feedback, and continuously refine offerings.
- Budgeting: Manage the education department's budget, allocate resources efficiently, and often identify grant or alternative revenue opportunities.
Qualifications
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Education, Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field is typically required; a Master’s degree is often preferred.
- Experience: Typically 5 to 10 years of progressive experience in instructional design, adult learning, and staff development, including several years in a managerial or director role. Experience in various clinical areas preferred.
- Certification: Must possess BLS and ACLS certification.
- Licensure: Must possess licensure for the State of New York as a Licensed Registered Nurse or other licensure with the state of New York.

- Previous management experience preferred.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of clinical protocol, procedures, and standards within the area of nursing expertise.
- Ability to provide operational guidance and leadership to technical staff in the area of specialty.
- Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
- Ability to assess educational needs and design and develop appropriate curricula.
- Working knowledge of the use of established clinical and preceptorship models in the development of clinical education programs.
- Technical leadership skills within the area of expertise.
- Advanced nursing skills in the area of specialty.
- Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate individual patient care programs.
- Highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively at all levels in a collaborative team environment.
