Director of Design / AI Platform / NYC

About the role

The Director of Product Design will lead and scale the design organization of a leading AI-powered software platform. The company aims to empower users from first-time entrepreneurs to enterprise organizations to build fully functional applications without traditional coding. With over six million users globally, the platform combines AI-powered creation with a visual development platform to enable rapid application development.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a world-class design team
• Partner closely with Product, Engineering, and Executive Leadership to shape the future of the platform
• Hire and develop world-class design talent
• Establish scalable design processes that support rapid product development and iteration
• Drive the long-term product vision that makes building software intuitive for millions of users
• Balance customer needs, business objectives, and technical constraints when making product decisions
• Conduct user research and leverage customer insights to improve workflows, onboarding, and product usability
• Guide teams through design exploration, prototyping, validation, and iterative product development
• Evolve the design system to ensure consistency, scalability, and exceptional user experiences across the platform
• Partner closely with Product and Engineering leadership to shape product vision and long-term UX strategy
• Help define how millions of users build software through AI-powered visual development experiences

Requirements

• 10+ years of product design experience solving complex UX challenges within SaaS or technology companies
• 5+ years of experience leading, mentoring, and scaling high-performing product design teams
• Experience working within Product-Led Growth (PLG) SaaS organizations
• Proven success recruiting, developing, and retaining world-class design talent
• Deep expertise in user research, interaction design, product discovery, and design systems
• Strong ability to balance customer needs, business objectives, and technical constraints when making product decisions
• Exceptional communication, leadership, and cross-functional collaboration skills
• Experience designing AI-powered products or no-code/low-code development platforms
• Experience scaling design organizations within high-growth startup environments
• Strong understanding of developer tools, SaaS platforms, or productivity software
• Experience partnering closely with executive leadership on product vision and strategy
• Passion for coaching and developing future design leaders
• Strong understanding of experimentation, usability testing, and customer research methodologies
• Strategic mindset with the ability to influence organizational priorities across multiple stakeholders
• Self-starter with a passion for building exceptional user experiences and high-performing teams

• Drive Product Design hiring strategy, interview processes, and organizational growth initiatives
• Establish and refine design processes across product discovery, validation, and product delivery
