About the Role

The Director of Dental Education is responsible for the overall planning, development, and implementation of the Dental Hygiene (DHY) program curriculum, including oversight of the Dental Lab and Clinic. Provides administrative support to the Dental Assisting (DA) Program, including faculty recruiting, lab and clinic scheduling, budget review, and course coverage. Ensures curriculum alignment with industry standards and state regulations for both DHY and DA programs. The Director also serves as an instructor in the DHY program, teaching three faculty-load hours each semester, and ensures compliance with the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards.

Responsibilities

Administrative Duties

  • Develop short- and long-range planning objectives for the DHY program; prepare and administer the program budget.
  • Identify requirements for equipment, rentals, materials, and supplies for the DHY and DA programs; coordinate purchases with the Assistant Dean.
  • Ensure the DHY program engages with the community and promotes preventative oral healthcare services.
  • Recommend course offerings, class sizes, schedules, faculty load, and instructional materials to the Assistant Dean.
  • Assist in the promotion, retention, evaluation, and professional development of program faculty.
  • Coordinate class schedules for fall, spring, and summer terms for DHY and DA programs.
  • Assist in developing program handbooks, admission materials, web content, and the college catalog.
  • Support student recruitment, including conducting program Information Sessions.
  • Review and revise the DHY curriculum to comply with CODA and industry standards.
  • Develop, revise, and maintain course and program learning outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with College, State, and Federal regulations, including HIPAA, FERPA, and external standards.
  • Provide strategic and visionary leadership for the program.
  • Serve as chair of the Dental Advisory Committee and conduct at least one meeting per academic year.
  • Participate in state and national professional education activities and attend at least one CODA conference annually.
  • Ensure program and clinic compliance with OSHA, Department of Health and Human Services, CDC, ADA, and CODA standards.
  • Develop and maintain course and program maps for accreditation evidence.
  • Prepare accreditation reports, including annual reports and self-study reports, and coordinate CODA site visits.

Instructional Program Management

  • Oversee and administer the DHY program, including curriculum development, revision, and evaluation.
  • Develop new curricula, courses, syllabi, and outlines; recommend program expansions or terminations.
  • Conduct Learning Outcome Assessment (LOA) and Academic Program Reviews (APR).
  • Gather input on curriculum from DHY stakeholders.
  • Maintain program files, records, course outlines, syllabi, and student records.
  • Serve as liaison with clinical agencies to evaluate curriculum relevance and clinical teaching objectives.
  • Coordinate distance and online learning technology for DHY course delivery.
  • Ensure all course materials and equipment comply with accessibility regulations.

Personnel Management

  • Supervise and mentor DHY full- and part-time faculty and administrative coordinator.
  • Recruit and hire dental assisting faculty in collaboration with CEWD.
  • Develop and revise orientation materials for new faculty.
  • Encourage and support faculty professional development and collaboration.
  • Serve as liaison with part-time faculty to ensure administrative support and communication.
  • Evaluate full-time and part-time faculty for teaching effectiveness and suitability.
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and student-centered academic environment.
  • Consult with faculty on instructional matters and advise the Assistant Dean on program administration and policies.
  • Schedule and participate in orientation seminars for DHY students.

Teaching Duties

  • Serve as an instructor in the DHY program with administrative release time.
  • Arrange and/or provide instructional course coverage for DHY and DA programs.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree (minimum) from a CODA-accredited program.
  • Registered Dental Hygienist with a Maryland license to practice dental hygiene, including certification to administer local anesthesia and nitrous oxide.
  • Minimum of five years of full-time experience, including at least three years of full-time clinical experience.
  • Didactic and/or clinical teaching experience.
  • Ability to meet faculty requirements as outlined in CODA standards.
  • Demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive environment and ability to work collegially with diverse groups.
  • Experience in curriculum development, instructional design, student evaluation, and outcome assessment.
  • Frequent standing, bending, and lifting (under 50 lbs.); occasional heavier lifting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing administrative functions and overseeing operational activities.
  • Demonstrated success in leadership roles, including team development and strategic execution.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across departments and maintain an open, receptive approach to feedback.

Pay

Salary Range: $123,469–$154,336

Benefits

Eligible for a comprehensive benefits package. Pay dates occur on the 7th and 22nd of each month (or the prior Friday if these dates fall on a weekend).
