About the role

The Director of Construction provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all construction operations, including HVAC, Plumbing, and Piping Field Operations, Sheetmetal Fabrication, and Logistics. This position is responsible for driving operational excellence while ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and at or above expected profit margins.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead and promote Capstone's culture of safety, integrity, accountability, teamwork, and customer service.

  • Provide leadership and oversight for all construction operations, including HVAC, Plumbing, and Piping Field Operations, Sheetmetal Fabrication, and Logistics.

  • Develop and execute departmental goals that align with the company's strategic initiatives and annual business plan.

  • Mentor, coach, and develop construction leadership while fostering professional growth throughout the organization.

  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and establish development plans for direct reports.

  • Partner with executive leadership to develop operational strategies, staffing plans, and business growth initiatives.

  • Champion and reinforce Capstone's safety culture across all construction operations.

  • Ensure all projects comply with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.

  • Support and collaborate with the Safety Manager to reduce incidents, improve safety performance, and promote proactive safety initiatives.

  • Identify and mitigate operational, contractual, financial, and project-related risks.

  • Ensure construction teams have the resources, manpower, equipment, and tools necessary to successfully execute projects.

  • Monitor project schedules, staffing, and productivity to optimize operational efficiency.

  • Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and profitability throughout the construction division.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with owners, owner representatives, architects, engineers, general contractors, construction managers, and subcontractors.

  • Support contract negotiations with executive leadership to protect the company's financial and legal interests.

  • Review construction contracts, specifications, drawings, and project documents to ensure compliance and minimize risk.

  • Represent Capstone professionally during client meetings, project reviews, industry events, and networking opportunities.

  • Partner with Human Resources and Operations to recruit, hire, develop, and retain top construction talent.

  • Ensure competitive staffing levels to support current and future project demands.

  • Develop and implement training programs for field leadership, safety, and technical development.

  • Promote employee engagement and maintain a positive, team-oriented work environment.

Qualifications & Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Engineering, Business Management, or a related field preferred; equivalent industry experience will be considered.

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in commercial mechanical construction.

  • Minimum of 5 years managing multiple Project Managers, Operations Managers, or construction leadership teams.

  • Extensive knowledge of commercial HVAC and plumbing construction methods, scheduling, estimating, budgeting, procurement, and project management.

  • Demonstrated experience managing departmental budgets and P&L responsibilities.

  • Strong understanding of construction contracts, risk management, and legal compliance.

  • Proven ability to develop high-performing teams while promoting accountability and collaboration.

  • Exceptional leadership, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple initiatives simultaneously.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with sound business judgment.

  • Proficiency with construction management software, Microsoft Office Suite, ERP systems, and project financial reporting tools.

  • Valid driver's license with the ability to travel to project sites as required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform the physical demands associated with commercial construction environments, including standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, kneeling, crouching, bending, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds when necessary.

  • Ability to visit active construction sites and safely navigate uneven terrain, elevated work areas, and mechanical spaces.

  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and construction environments.

  • Must comply with all OSHA regulations and Capstone Mechanical Services safety policies and procedures.
