Director of Benefits, Wellness, & HRIS
Location: 434 Harrison Ave, Boston MA, 02118
This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days on-site and 2 days remote. Participation in HR Friday office coverage is mandatory (1x per month).
About the role
Reporting directly to the Vice President of People and Culture, the Director of Benefits, Wellness and HRIS oversees and manages employee benefits, wellness programs, and HRIS (electronic and paper) recordkeeping for all employees and trainees. This role provides leadership in developing, executing, and administering high-quality benefits and wellness programs with a focus on customer service. The Director supervises Benefits department staff, ensures effective and efficient benefits program operation, and coordinates with the finance department. The role also ensures the agency maximizes ROI on HR systems, including benefits administration, applicant tracking, employee file maintenance, and payroll. The Director maintains compliance with regulatory obligations, offers competitive benefits within resource limitations, and aligns wellness strategies with organizational goals.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage employee benefits and wellness programs.
- Lead the development, execution, and administration of benefits programs with a focus on customer service.
- Provide supervision, coaching, and support to Benefits department staff.
- Ensure benefits programs operate effectively and efficiently in coordination with the finance department.
- Maximize ROI on HR systems, including benefits administration, applicant tracking, employee file maintenance, and payroll.
- Maintain compliance with all regulatory obligations for employee benefits.
- Align wellness strategy and programs with organizational goals.
- Ensure accurate, complete, and compliant employee records.
- Develop and maintain relationships with external partners such as insurers, brokers, consultants, and software companies.
- Facilitate difficult conversations and mediate conflicts as needed.
- Adapt to changing priorities and manage a complex workload.
- Streamline HR data to support data-driven decision-making and transition from paper to electronic processing.

Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree or a minimum of 5 years’ experience in HR Benefits, or certification in human resources, business administration, or a related field.
- Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s degree in human resources or a related field (preferred).
- Human Resources Professional Certification (PHR, SHRM-CP) or Certified Employee Benefits Specialist or similar professional certification (preferred).
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible human resources and/or benefit administration experience; or equivalent combination of skills and experience.
- Experience researching and implementing streamlined HRIS platforms.
- Strong planning and organizational skills; superior interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills.
- Experience supporting a human/social service, academic department, or business unit.
- Significant experience in all facets of benefits administration.
- Strong systems experience and ability to oversee and ensure accuracy and timeliness in electronic data management.
- Demonstrated experience building strong partnerships with managers to deliver expert HR guidance.
- Demonstrated experience leading work groups and project management.
- Experience streamlining HR data to contribute to data-driven decision-making.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working in an HR department supporting programs servicing homeless individuals or those with complex disabilities and significant barriers to housing.
- Experience supervising administrative or junior-level professional staff.
- Experience in change management or supporting organizational evolution to enhance performance.
Pay
$120,000 - $140,000 annually (depending on experience and relevant skill set).
Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm.
