Director of Benefits
About the Role
Jordan School District is one of Utah's largest and fastest-growing school districts — 57,000+ students, thousands of educators and support professionals, and communities that are growing faster than almost anywhere in the state. Behind every great classroom is an employee who feels secure, supported, and well. That's where you come in. We're looking for a Director of Benefits who sees benefits as more than plans and premiums — a strategic, people-first leader who will design the total wellbeing experience for the people who unleash the potential of every student.
What You'll Own
- Shape the strategy. Lead the design, evaluation, and development of health, dental, and benefit programs for one of Utah's largest school districts — balancing innovation, employee value, and fiscal stewardship.
- Champion the employee experience. Partner directly with the Administrator of Employee Experience & Wellness to build wellness, recognition, and incentive programs that make JSD a place people join — and stay.
- Make the complex clear. Translate benefits into language every employee can act on, so an educator in their first year and a bus driver in their twentieth both make confident, informed decisions.
- Lead with data. Use utilization, cost, and engagement data to find gaps, drive decisions, and tell the story of employee wellbeing to executive leadership and the Board of Education.
- Build partnerships that deliver. Manage vendors, consultants, and the District Insurance Advisory Committee so that service to employees is fast and accurate.
- Develop a team. Coach and professionally grow the benefits department — modeling the same culture of belonging we build for every employee.
Why This Role, Why Now
Public education is competing for talent like never before — and benefits are one of the most powerful levers we have. This role sits at the intersection of strategy, wellbeing, and impact: the programs you build will support every employee in the district and, through them, every student in every classroom.
Experiences That Signal Readiness
- Six to ten years working with employee insurance programs and processes — or an equivalent combination of experience and education that demonstrates the competencies above.
- Leading an open enrollment cycle or benefits program change for a workforce of significant scale.
- Partnering with wellness, engagement, or total rewards functions — or building that connection where it didn't exist.
- Presenting benefits strategy, cost analysis, or program recommendations to executive leadership or a governing board.
- Working within public sector, education, or similarly mission-driven and fiscally accountable environments (valued, not required).
Valued Pathways
A Bachelor's degree in HR, business, organizational development, or a related field is the standard pathway (Master's preferred), and certifications including CEBS, GBA, RPA, HIA, or REBC are strong signals of professional depth. Equivalent combinations of experience and education are welcomed.

Utah State Retirement
Benefit eligible employees are automatically members of the Utah Retirement Systems (URS). This means that the District contributes into the URS plan on your behalf each month. After the URS vesting period of four years, you will have either the Hybrid option, which is a combination of a pension with a 401k plan, or the 401k option if you choose. Both plans are employer-paid. You can also choose to enhance your retirement with URS by contributing additional money from your paychecks into a 401k, 457, Traditional IRA, or Roth IRA. Learn more about URS retirement plans and investment options at www.urs.org. You may also contact the Payroll Department at 801-567-8154 with any questions.
