About the role

The Director of Accounting (Volunteer) role at Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a leadership position overseeing accounting systems, financial recordkeeping, and reporting processes. This role supports the Chief of Finance in ensuring that financial documentation, reporting, and accounting procedures meet professional and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting systems and financial recordkeeping processes
  • Ensure accurate tracking of revenues, expenses, and financial transactions
  • Maintain financial documentation in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards
  • Support preparation of financial reports and internal financial documentation
  • Aid in budgeting and financial oversight processes
  • Prepare for audits, financial reviews, and compliance documentation
  • Develop and maintain internal accounting procedures and financial controls
  • Coordinate with program, compliance, and finance teams on financial matters affecting operations
  • Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via email and chat in Google Workspace

Qualifications

  • Required: Background in accounting, finance, or financial management; Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting; Strong attention to detail and organizational skills; Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values
  • PREFERRED: CPA or equivalent professional accounting experience; Experience with nonprofit accounting practices and compliance requirements; Familiarity with grant accounting and restricted funds management; Experience supporting financial audits or financial reporting processes

Commitment

This is a volunteer leadership role requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week with a minimum 6-month commitment. The role is fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration.
