Director, Medical Surgical
About the role
Directs the department’s activities and resources to achieve departmental and organizational objectives.
Responsibilities
- Develops and implements departmental goals, plans, and standards consistent with the clinical, administrative, legal, and ethical requirements/objectives of the organization.
- Directs and evaluates departmental operations, including patient care delivery, information technologies, service level determination, and complaint management, to achieve performance and quality control objectives.
- Plans and monitors staffing activities, including hiring, orienting, evaluating, disciplinary actions, and continuing education initiatives.
- Prepares, monitors, and evaluates departmental budgets, and ensures that the department operates in compliance with allocated funding.
- Coordinates and directs internal/external audits.
- Creates and fosters an environment that encourages professional growth.
- Integrates evidence-based practices into operations and clinical protocols.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Manage the work of others, including planning, assigning, scheduling and reviewing work, ensures quality standards.
- Responsible for hiring, terminating, training and developing, reviewing performance and administering corrective action for staff.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required
- Master’s Degree preferred
- Active Tennessee or compact state Registered Nursing license
- BLS certification
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Business Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rates, ratios, and percentages; draw and interpret graphs.
- Moderate Computer Skills: Frequent use of electronic mail, word processing, data entry, spreadsheets, graphics; ability to create, maintain and incorporate simple functions into documents, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations to support business objectives.
- Complex Communication: Frequently communicates complex information and interacts with management; presents, resolves, and addresses delicate situations; motivates and persuades others.

Work Environment
Works in well-lit, ventilated and climate-controlled office environment with routine office equipment; some equipment has moving mechanical parts. In hospital environment, may be exposed to hazards and unusual elements, including but not limited to bloodborne pathogens and/or contagious illnesses, toxic chemicals, and biohazardous materials which may require extensive safety precautions and the use of protective equipment. Noise level in the work environment is typical for an office and/or hospital environment.
Minimum overnight travel (up to 10%) by land and/or air.
