Director – Judicial Tenure Commission

Position Overview

The Judicial Tenure Commission (JTC) is the independent state agency responsible for investigating complaints of judicial misconduct and judicial incapacity, and for recommending discipline of judges by the Michigan Supreme Court. Its jurisdiction includes all active judicial officers, as that term is defined in the Michigan Court Rules. The JTC is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Director.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Carry out the directives, policies, and decisions of the JTC;
  • Provide legal advice to the Commission acting as its General Counsel;
  • Supervise investigations undertaken at the Commission’s direction;
  • Act as the disciplinary counsel when the Commission issues a formal complaint;
  • Act as the liaison between the Commission and the public;
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Commission office;
  • Supervise the Commission’s attorney and administrative staff;
  • Supervise the keeping and maintenance of the Commission’s files and records;
  • Represent the JTC making presentations to various community groups and training sessions conducted by the Supreme Court Administrative Office.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Lead JTC staff including recruitment of highly qualified staff providing development resources, performance communication planning, compensation and discipline as appropriate;
  • Meet with staff regarding performance at an appropriate frequency and document those meetings;
  • Maintain and manage the JTC budget.

Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school with a minimum of ten years of experience as a practicing attorney;
  • Five years of management or supervisory experience required;
  • Five years of active trial court work (i.e., Prosecutorial or trial court experience) preferred.

Knowledge

  • Excellent proofreading, editing, legal research, and writing skills;
  • Familiarity with the Michigan Code of Judicial Conduct;
  • Familiarity with the Michigan Court Rules, particularly court rules governing judicial ethics and the Judicial Tenure Commission;
  • Familiarity with Michigan Law, including statutes and case law.

Ability

  • Communicate effectively with varied audiences;
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships and communicate effectively with internal and external constituents;
  • Present to or train varied audiences;
  • Operate in a fast-paced environment where priorities may be affected by outside influences.

Work Location

Cadillac Place, Detroit, Michigan.
