Director, Insurance and Enterprise Risk Management

About the role
TerraPower is seeking a highly talented and motivated Director of Insurance and Enterprise Risk Management to proactively manage the company’s insurance programs, advise on project-specific insurance, and ensure responsible business risk management through effective claims prevention and mitigation. This role reports to the Associate General Counsel, Legal.
Responsibilities
- Insurance Program Management:
- Manage TerraPower’s corporate and project-specific insurance lines, including property and casualty, financial and professional liability, and project-specific placements (e.g., builder’s risk, OCIP/CCIP).
- Partner with finance to manage the surety program, including bonding capacity, surety relationships, collateral requirements, and indemnity obligations.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on U.S. and international nuclear liability frameworks and nuclear insurance policies, providing guidance on nuclear licensing requirements (e.g., 10 CFR50.54(w), 10 CFR50.75, 10 CFR140.11).
- Manage insurance broker relationships, develop placement strategies, negotiate coverage terms, handle claims, and issue certificates of insurance.
- Collaborate with engineering and EHS teams to evaluate and implement loss control measures, focusing on total cost of risk (TCOR).
- Evaluate, develop, or implement alternative risk transfer programs and specialty insurance products as needed.
- Analyze TerraPower’s risk appetite, risk-bearing capacity, and risk-sharing standards during insurance placements and renewals, using advanced risk analytics and loss modeling.
- Collaborate with legal, procurement, and contracts teams to negotiate vendor, customer, and commercial contracts, including indemnity provisions, risk of loss, and insurance requirements for both TerraPower and counterparties.
- Ensure compliance with contractual insurance provisions and administer insurance policies in accordance with terms, conditions, and claims reporting requirements.
- Review insurance binders, policies, and endorsements for accuracy and inclusion of negotiated terms.
- Enterprise Risk Management (ERM):
- Manage the taxonomy and governance of the ERM program, developing scalable processes to identify, assess, mitigate, report, and monitor risks to TerraPower’s strategic goals.
- Oversee annual enterprise risk assessments, including interviews with leadership, to identify emerging risks and inform risk reporting and prioritization.
- Develop and refine enterprise risk appetite and tolerances.
- Provide executive reports on the ERM program to the ERMC Committee and Board Audit Committee.
- General:
- Implement risk management and insurance program process improvements to reduce inefficiencies and streamline operations.
- Develop and conduct training programs to familiarize project teams with insurance and risk concepts, policies, and best practices.
- Collaborate with internal audit, EHS, quality assurance, IT, and finance to enable an integrated risk management program.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a business or risk-management-related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 10+ years of relevant insurance-related experience (general liability strongly preferred), with at least 3 years as a corporate risk manager.
- Experience in nuclear energy, nuclear pharmacy, construction, utilities, or insurance brokerage.
- Knowledge:
- Expert knowledge of commercial insurance concepts.
- Proven experience in enterprise risk management and risk mitigation strategies.
- Knowledge of construction methods, industry-standard insurance policies, and forms.
- Experience managing complex claims.
- Familiarity with contract provisions related to insurance.
- Expertise in data analysis and reporting.
- Understanding of the regulatory and administrative environment for risk management.

- Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), or Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) preferred.

Pay
Salary Range: $184,368 – $245,824 (Washington State). Offers are typically placed in the lower to middle portion of the range to maintain internal equity and allow for growth. Salary is based on market data and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
