About the role

As a director, engineering - Web & Mobile, you will lead the engineering teams responsible for the Starbucks customer-facing digital experiences across iOS, Android, and web. This role is accountable for shaping the technical strategy, engineering execution, quality practices, and platform evolution that support millions of customer interactions and help drive engagement across Starbucks digital channels.

This leader will bring deep experience in software engineering, mobile and web application development, platform modernization, and people leadership. They will work closely with Product, Design, Architecture, QA, Security, Operations, and business stakeholders to deliver high-quality, scalable, and resilient digital experiences. The ideal candidate will be a strong technical leader, an effective cross-functional partner, and a proven developer of engineering talent.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering strategy for Starbucks web and mobile platforms - Define and execute the technical vision, roadmap, and engineering priorities for iOS, Android, and web applications, ensuring alignment with Starbucks business goals, customer experience priorities, and enterprise technology strategy.
  • Deliver high-quality customer-facing digital experiences - Oversee the full software development lifecycle across strategy, planning, design, development, delivery, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Starbucks web and mobile products.
  • Drive engineering excellence and delivery velocity - Champion modern engineering practices, scalable architecture, QA automation, DevOps, AI adoption, and continuous improvement to increase release confidence, improve quality, and accelerate delivery.
  • Build and develop high-performing engineering teams - Lead managers and engineers across distributed teams, set clear goals, provide coaching and feedback, build leadership capability, and create an inclusive environment where partners can do their best work.
  • Partner across Product, Design, and Technology - Work with cross-functional leaders to translate business and customer needs into clear technology plans and aligned execution.

Requirements

  • 5+ years experience building and leading teams of engineers.
  • Demonstrated experience directing the software development function, including the process, design, development, delivery and maintenance of software products and services.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering solutions for retail, internet or similar companies.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills: you can communicate conceptual ideas, engineering rationale and technical challenges both verbally and visually, to a wide range of audiences.
  • Experience working with distributed teams.

*For roles in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above. For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.

Pay

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
