Director- Data Science
Position Summary
Lead and develop a team that enables Walmart Marketplace. Focus on technical and thought leadership, people development, and operational process optimization.
What you'll do...
Translate strategy into execution by aligning cross-functional partners, contribute to marketplace KPIs, lead a team of data scientists, ML engineers, and data analysts, partner with product, engineering, merchandising, and business stakeholders, oversee the data science lifecycle, drive AI innovation, ensure robust model governance, communicate complex technical concepts, and stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies.
Position Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a team of data scientists, ML engineers, and data analysts dedicated to Marketplace initiatives across the seller lifecycle.
- Partner with product, engineering, merchandising, and business stakeholders to identify opportunities and align on strategic initiatives.
- Partner with other cross-location data science teams to ensure continuous development and monitoring of Marketplace ML models.
- Oversee the end-to-end data science lifecycle: problem scoping, literature review, model design, algorithmic optimization, engineering integration, deployment, monitoring, and impact measurement.
- Drive AI innovation in marketplace AI models, including experimenting with new models and algorithms to improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Ensure robust model governance, model monitoring, reproducibility, and ethical AI practices.
- Communicate complex technical concepts and business impact effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership.
- Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences and executive leadership.
- Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies in data science and AI.
Position Requirements
- Very good knowledge of the foundations of machine learning and statistics.
- Experience in building large-scale ML systems involving machine learning, supervised and unsupervised learning, and deep learning.
- Hands-on experience in Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing (NLP).
- Experience leading a team of data scientists, ML engineers, and data analysts.
- Experience partnering with product, engineering, merchandising, and business stakeholders.
- Experience working with cross-location data science teams.
- Experience overseeing the entire data science lifecycle.
- Experience driving AI innovation and experimentation with new models and algorithms.
- Experience ensuring robust model governance, model monitoring, reproducibility, and ethical AI practices.
- Experience communicating complex technical concepts and business impact effectively.
- Experience staying current with industry trends and emerging technologies in data science and AI.
Qualifications
- Masters degree in Computer Science/Statistics/Mathematics with > 12 years of relevant experience OR Ph.D. in Computer Science/Statistics/Mathematics with > 14 years of relevant experience.
- Experience of acting as a people lead for > 5 years.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 6 years' experience in an analytics-related field.
- Masters degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 4 years' experience in an analytics-related field.
- 8 years' experience in an analytics or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Data science, machine learning, optimization models.
- PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Econometrics.
- Successful completion of one or more assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R.
- Supervisory experience.
- Using open-source frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
- Knowledge of creating inclusive digital experiences.
- Knowledge of implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards.
- Knowledge of assistive technologies.
- Knowledge of integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.
Pay
The annual salary range for this position is $156,000.00 - $312,000.00. Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include stock.
