About the role
The ideal candidate will have very strong contract negotiation and drafting skills, provide strategic, creative and effective legal and business advice, use sound judgment in balancing legal risk against business needs and goals, be an excellent communicator at all levels of an organization, and thrive tackling complex challenges in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements and other legal documents with customers, technology partners, service providers, vendors, and licensors
- Create new agreement templates, tools and processes to enhance how our team supports our business partners and creates consistency across our agreements
- Build and present training programs on contracts and substantive law topics to support business teams
- Support M&A activity, financing transactions, and other corporate initiatives as they arise
- Serve as a reliable, approachable legal advisor and provide partnership for business team projects
- Contribute to strategic initiatives
Requirements
- J.D. from an accredited law school with a strong academic record and bar admission in good standing (preferably in Illinois)
- Previous in-house experience with a focus on contract work and prior experience at a major law firm, including progressive responsibility
- Significant experience with privacy, data management, and/or cybersecurity is a plus
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including active listening, necessary for effective collaboration at all levels of an organization
- Rigorous and thorough legal analytical skills, including the ability to generate elegant solutions that enable business goals while mitigating risk
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and excited to work as part of the larger legal organization
- A desire to learn, to be challenged, and to grow in a fast-paced environment of innovators and strategic thinkers
Qualifications
- Must be authorized to work in the United States
- Ability to perform primarily sedentary work, frequently using a computer (visual acuity, fine motor skills) and telephone (talking/hearing)
- Ability to exchange information in written format
- Ability to learn the procedures, function, and limitations of assigned duties
- Ability to recognize when there is a problem (when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong)
- Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense
- Flexibility to work outside of normal hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed
