Director, Chief of Staff

About the role

The Chief of Staff will drive operational excellence and support the strategic success of a high‑impact portfolio that underpins Capital One’s growth and protection of its business. This portfolio includes the Prometheus Financial Core (PFC) platform, which enables partners to innovate and launch new financial products, and the Enterprise Credit Bureau Reporting (eCBR) platform, which ensures accurate, compliant reporting of consumer data to national credit bureaus. The role offers unparalleled visibility into the technology strategy that fuels Capital One’s competitive edge and foundational stability.

Responsibilities

• Drive strategic programs in partnership with key stakeholders, designing and implementing short‑ and long‑term initiatives that advance organizational growth.
• Serve as a trusted advisor and strategic thought partner to senior leadership, guiding day‑to‑day operations and long‑term management.
• Orchestrate organizational strategic planning, including financial and resource allocation, in close collaboration with cross‑functional partners.
• Leverage a strong command of current technologies, including AI, to drive operational efficiency and modernization.
• Manage delivery roadmaps and prioritization, proactively identifying and resolving cross‑tower dependencies and impediments.
• Influence and align matrixed stakeholder teams to cohesively execute organizational priorities and foster a culture of open exchange.
• Lead change management initiatives and operational excellence efforts, ensuring new processes enable sustained success.
• Assess feasibility of emerging projects with leadership and establish robust, agile implementation plans.
• Demonstrate elite oral, written, and presentation skills to communicate impact across diverse teams and senior leadership.
• Partner with communications teams to elevate the line‑of‑business brand, highlighting measurable impact of strategic initiatives.
• Champion innovative or unpopular ideas courageously, challenging senior leaders when necessary to drive optimal business outcomes.
• Operate with high autonomy on complex, sensitive assignments; quickly master new topics and navigate corporate matrices using exceptional business judgment, negotiation, and mediation skills.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree.
• At least 7 years of experience in project management, process management, or program management.
• At least 3 years of experience managing executive‑level stakeholders across multiple business units.
• At least 3 years of experience partnering with engineering and product teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA).
• 6+ years of experience driving organizational change and operational excellence.
• 5+ years of experience in strategy development.
• 3+ years of experience in budgeting and labor strategy.

Pay

Salary ranges (full‑time annual) by location:

• McLean, VA: $230,400 – $263,000 for Director, Chief of Staff
• Plano, TX: $209,500 – $239,100 for Director, Chief of Staff
• Richmond, VA: $209,500 – $239,100 for Director, Chief of Staff
• Other locations: salary will align with the pay range associated with that location.

This role is also eligible to earn performance‑based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonuses and/or long‑term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non‑discretionary depending on the plan.
