Director, AI Engineering

About the role

We are seeking an accomplished Director of AI Engineering to lead the strategy, architecture, and delivery of enterprise‑scale agentic AI capabilities within Humana’s AI platform. This leader will drive the development of foundational AI services, frameworks, and platforms that enable the organization to rapidly build, deploy, and scale next‑generation AI solutions across diverse business domains. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in AI/ML engineering with proven leadership experience in building high‑performing engineering organizations. They will influence enterprise AI strategy, partner with senior technology leaders across architecture, security, data, and product teams, and establish the technical vision required to accelerate adoption of agentic AI while ensuring scalability, security, reliability, and business impact.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a team of AI engineers building foundational services, frameworks, and tools for agentic AI applications—enabling consistent, scalable, and cost‑effective development across the organization.
• Stay current with industry trends in generative AI (e.g., foundation models, evaluation techniques, retrieval‑augmented generation, fine‑tuning approaches, and open‑source tooling) and help the team apply them effectively.
• Drive cross‑functional alignment with enterprise architecture, security, data engineering, DevOps, and application leads to ensure the generative AI platform is well‑integrated and aligned with broader enterprise goals.
• Mentor and coach AI engineers, helping them grow their technical skills and career paths while fostering a culture of experimentation, humility, and excellence.
• Ensure strong engineering practices including CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and incident response for all services owned by the team.
• Define and drive strategic plans, goals, and team performance based on company‑wide agentic AI initiatives, balancing near‑term needs with long‑term platform investments.
• Lead collaboration with application teams to understand their needs and design systems that solve complex challenges with reusable components on the agentic AI platform (e.g., LLM orchestration frameworks, experiment tracking, evaluation pipelines, model proxy/gateways, observability, etc.).
• Work with broad guidelines and technical knowledge to solve highly complex problems with long‑term impacts.

Required Qualifications

• Advanced degree (Ph.D. or Master’s) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 10+ years of experience in AI/ML engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
• Proficiency in machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), Python, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Proven track record of leading and growing high‑performing engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to think strategically and execute methodically.

Additional Information

This is a hybrid office position where employees primarily operate from the company office with occasional work‑from‑home to support focus work and work/life balance needs. Designated Tech Market locations for this role: New York City; Louisville, KY; Dallas, TX. Scheduled weekly hours: 40.

Pay

Base salary range: $189,400 – $260,500 per year (estimate for full‑time, 40‑hour week; actual compensation may vary by location and individual qualifications). This role is eligible for a bonus incentive plan based on company and/or individual performance.
