Responsibilities
- Work with the multistate income tax consulting team to assist both internal teams and external clients with their corporate state/local tax matters, including conformity, apportionment, nexus, unity, application of NOLs and credits, and fed-state tax differences
- Provide state and local income/franchise tax support on transactions, including buy-side and sell-side due diligence and post-acquisition integration
- Aid in controversies, refund claims, multistate planning, organizational structure optimization, and other general consulting
- Quantify historical state tax exposure and assist clients with remediation, including voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs) and amended returns
- Drafting memorandums, refund claims, protests, appeals, IDR responses to state auditors, etc.
- Support state and local income tax provisions under ASC 740, including uncertain tax positions, deferred items, and related financial statement disclosures
- Review state income and franchise tax returns for compliance or refund reviews
- Review state estimated payments to identify cash preservation opportunities and exposure
- Provide consulting for state/local franchise taxes (i.e., gross receipts and capital-based taxes)
- Advises pass-through entities and their owners on state pass-through entity tax (PTET) elections and the related apportionment and owner-level filing implications
- Support state and local income/franchise tax support on transactions, including buy-side and sell-side due diligence and post-acquisition integration
- Maintain risk and financial performance of engagements including billing, collections, and project budgets
- Develop and manage strong client relationships by understanding their business operations and tailoring our services to their specific needs
- Identify credits and incentives opportunities, including statutory and negotiated incentives
- Lead engagement workflow and manage project delivery to ensure technical accuracy and high-quality work is completed on time, within budget, and in line with client expectations and statutory requirements
- Leverage tax technology and data analytics tools to improve the accuracy and efficiency of state tax compliance and reporting
- Mentor and develop other KBF professionals within a collaborative team environment
- Research and stay current on changes in the profession and state tax laws
- 6 years or more of recent experience performing tax research, reviewing state income tax returns and providing technical guidance on multi-state income tax issues
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university
- Licensed CPA or EA in their home office state
- Motivated, quick learner with strong compliance, communication, management, and tax research skills, as well as demonstrated professionalism
- Ability to work a hybrid schedule with a minimum of two days per week in office is preferred
- Remote or Hybrid from any of the following office locations: Irvine, CA | San Diego, CA | Lake Oswego, OR | Las Vegas, NV | Seattle, WA
- The salary range for this position reflects various factors that influence compensation decisions, such as skills, experience, training, certifications, licensure, geographic location, and other organizational requirements. At KBF, it is uncommon for a candidate to be hired at the high end of the salary range, as compensation is based on the unique qualifications and circumstances of each individual. The estimated current salary range for this role is $175,000 to $205,000.
