Direct Support Professional - Registered Behavior Technician

Responsibilities

  • Provide overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals at all times, including maintaining house rules, facilitating fire-safety training, and escalating signs of potential harm to self or others.
  • Support individuals in various settings according to their individualized service and behavior support plans, addressing moderate to complex needs.
  • Ensure health, wellness, and safety by supervising individuals, managing crisis situations, and adhering to policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Implement plans of protective oversight, Individual Behavior Support Plans (IBSPs), and Individualized Program Plans (IPPs).
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work and therapy environment, including facility upkeep and safety protocols.
  • Utilize safe handling procedures and implement COVID mitigation and infection control measures.
  • Assist individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities while upholding personal rights and providing emotional support.
  • Engage in respectful communication using person-first language, encourage socializing, and facilitate community connections.
  • Support person-centered plans by:
    • Providing personal care and assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs).
    • Administering medication as prescribed and according to guidelines.
    • Teaching and developing skills.
    • Supporting advocacy, communication, self-expression, and dispute resolution.
    • Facilitating ethical decision-making.
  • Supervise, plan, and prepare balanced meals and snacks according to dietary restrictions.
  • Transport and escort individuals to recreational activities, medical appointments, and home visits.
  • Assist with purchases and safeguard personal allowance funds.
  • Complete and maintain all required trainings to ensure compliance with YAI policies and licensing regulations.
  • Review communication logs daily, document events, progress notes, and services, and collect/enter data using an electronic health record.
  • Complete all required paperwork and documentation accurately and within specified timeframes (e.g., incident reports, notifications, billing).
  • Maintain a therapeutic environment using Personal Outcome Measures, Person-Centered Thinking, Informed Decision Making, and Trauma-Informed Approaches.
  • Collaborate as part of an effective team, providing feedback and communicating programmatic needs.
  • Consult with program leadership, clinical staff, and direct support staff to ensure high-quality care and attend team meetings.
  • Apply foundational teaching skills (e.g., EMOE, task analysis, essential skills, supports, and modifications) and progressive teaching methods.
  • Comply with all federal, state, local, and regulatory requirements, including HIPAA.
  • Complete and maintain Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) requirements for certification/license (RBT or LPT) and other recertifications.
  • Demonstrate and model all skills of a Direct Support Professional (DSP)/Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) with a person-centered and trauma-informed approach.
  • Under appropriate supervision:
    • Participate in the development of treatment plans.
    • Develop and maintain specialized clinical knowledge for person-specific needs (e.g., supporting adults, challenging behaviors, autism spectrum disorders, complex medical needs).
    • Implement Behavior Support Plans (BSPs).
    • Collect, record, and summarize data on observable behaviors.
    • Observe and report changes in behavior or other signs and symptoms.
    • Communicate individual progress to authorized representatives as instructed by the Board-Certified Behavior Analyst.
  • Perform all other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver’s License may be required, depending on position/location.
  • Must hold or obtain Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification within one year of appointment (or be a Licensed Psych Technician or Qualified Behavior Modification Professional for California assignments).
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including email and use of Workday and related systems.
  • Interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to take initiative.
  • Ability to meet essential physical demands of the position, including:
    • Frequent walking, sitting, standing, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, and reaching.
    • Assisting with lifting/moving individuals using mechanical lifts or other equipment.
    • Lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds; occasional running.
    • Implementing emergency interventions as needed, including lifting/moving individuals with or without assistance.

Additional Requirements by State

  • New Jersey (Behavioral Health Stabilization Homes):
    • At least 6 months’ work or life experience with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities and/or behavioral challenges.
    • Valid Driver’s license with no more than 5 points.
    • Mandatory New Jersey State drug test screening.
  • California (Enhanced Behavioral Supports Homes and/or Community Crisis Homes):
    • At least six months’ prior experience providing direct care to individuals with developmental disabilities.
    • Successful completion of State of California Direct Support Professional Training (DSPT) Year 1 and Year 2 courses within one year of appointment.
    • Hold (or obtain) CPR/First Aid, Ukeru, and CPI certifications and recertify annually.
    • Completion of health screening.
    • Completion of annual continuing education units (CEUs) for professional development as required by Titles 17 & 22.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a Human Services field (e.g., social work, psychology).
  • Knowledge of intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), clinical syndromes, and/or I/DD with co-occurring behavioral/mental health needs.
  • Valid Driver’s License strongly preferred for California assignments.

Pay

$20.00 per hour.
