Arc of Acadiana is dedicated to using person-centered language and approaches. We support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through home and community-based services guided by Individualized Service Plans (ISPs).

About the role

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) implements ISP plans by providing individualized support in participants' homes and communities. The role focuses on promoting independence, skill development, community inclusion, and meaningful engagement.

Responsibilities

• Provide person-centered support based on each participant's goals, preferences, strengths, and routines.
• Assist with activities of daily living, including personal care, meal preparation, household tasks, errands, and other in-home supports.
• Encourage participants to make choices and perform tasks independently.
• Support skill development and independence through positive teaching strategies like modeling, prompting, and encouragement.
• Facilitate community inclusion by accompanying participants on outings, appointments, volunteer activities, and recreational events.
• Document and report accurately on service notes, progress, incident reports, and other relevant documentation.
• Observe and report on health, behavior, and overall well-being, follow safety procedures, and assist with medication administration when necessary.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, family members, and other team members, attend training sessions, and model professional conduct.
• Follow ISP plans, agency policies, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Related experience in human services, caregiving, or direct support preferred.
• Effective reading, writing, and communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• A commitment to person-centered support and participant dignity.
• A positive attitude, patience, and compassion.
• Reliability, accountability, and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to observe, document, and report information accurately.
• A basic understanding of health, safety, and support needs for individuals with developmental disabilities.
• A valid driver's license required.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and assist participants with mobility and daily activities.
• Ability to remain awake and alert during assigned shifts.
• Ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.

Work Environment

This position involves working in participants' homes and community settings. The DSP must engage with participants consistently, providing person-centered support that promotes independence, inclusion, and quality of life.
