Direct Support Assistant

Duties Description

Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) prioritizes the health and safety of the statewide 128,000 individuals with developmental disabilities. As a Direct Support Assistant (DSA), you will assist individuals in leading richer lives. Duties include:

• Providing supports and services.
• Advocating, encouraging, guiding, and teaching individuals in expressing personal choices.
• Ensuring community integration.
• Assisting with personal hygiene care, toileting, dining, dressing, meal preparation, lifts, and transfers.
• Helping individuals participate in games and recreational programs.
• Coaching and encouraging individuals to develop daily living skills.
• Providing a clean, safe, and comfortable environment.
• Working with other staff to carry out care plans and record care plans.
• Administering medication according to special instructions.

Minimum Qualifications

• A high school diploma or equivalency (GED, DSP Certificate).
• A valid New York State driver’s license.
• Physical and agility standards.

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). Employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to convert to permanent competitive status within one year.
