Dir. of Energy Storage and Power System IPT
About the role
We're transforming the future of urban mobility through safe, all-electric, autonomous flight. As the Director of Energy Storage and Power System (ESPS) Integrated Product Team (IPT), you will lead the vertical development, design, integration, certification, and delivery of safety-critical aircraft systems, including Aircraft Battery Packs, Battery Management System, Power Distribution, Power Conversion, and Charging systems. You will collaborate closely with interfacing IPTs such as Avionics, Propulsion, EWIS, and Passenger Systems, providing cross-functional leadership to ensure objectives are met within scope, schedule, and budget. This role requires onsite work at our Mountain View office.
Responsibilities
- Lead the IPT’s technical development efforts related to architecture, design, development, integration, validation, performance, certification, and production.
- Engage with IPT Leaders, Chief Engineers, Functional Managers, Program Office, and Company Leadership to ensure successful program planning and execution.
- Maintain authority and accountability for the IPT’s technical scope in alignment with schedule and budget.
- Support overall program success by defining schedule inputs and changes into the Integrated Master Schedule (IMS) and managing timely change control.
- Monitor technical maturity and address issues impacting progression with corrective actions and recovery plans.
- Plan and coordinate activities for formal validation and verification, including all test activities.
- Implement and follow risk management activities to address program technical, schedule, and cost risks.
- Coordinate engineering review, approval, and release processes for all key deliverables.
- Support multidisciplinary program reviews and presentations for development, certification, and production readiness with internal and external stakeholders.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or other relevant STEM field.
- 15+ years of experience in Aerospace or Battery engineering development and leadership, including scheduling and team/personnel management.
- 5+ years of experience leading a multi-functional, technically-oriented Integrated Product Team.
- 5+ years of experience in high-integrity battery system vertical development.
- Detailed knowledge of high and low voltage electrical power distribution topologies.
- Strong engineering analytical and technical skills with demonstrated experience delivering integrated technical solutions.
- Excellent communication and soft skills to collaborate across the organization.
- Experience performing cost and schedule management.
- Experience with risk, issues, and/or opportunity management.
- Strong decision-making abilities and effective management of rapidly changing priorities.
- Knowledge of systems engineering and systems safety analyses and processes, including SAE ARP 4754A, Advisory Circular 23.1309-1E, SAE ARP 4761, and Part 25/29 certification requirements.
Qualifications (Desired)
- Master’s or PhD in engineering or other relevant STEM fields.
- 5+ years of experience working with Aerospace technologies, products, and services.
- 2+ years of lithium-ion cell characterization and testing experience.
- Demonstrated experience leading technical teams from R&D to product delivery and in-service support, preferably with civil-certified aircraft.
- Experience with performance and destructive testing of electric vehicle battery systems, preferably within aircraft.
- Experience designing battery management system state estimation and fault detection algorithms.
- Developed complex systems using System Engineering processes, including architecture development, systems integration, requirements development, validation, verification, and process control.
- Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), including use case development, activity diagrams, and logical architecture.
- Experience with Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS).
- Experience with DO-178C and DO-254 compliance for safety-critical Battery Management System (BMS) software and hardware.
- Proven track record navigating aviation certification pathways for safety-critical systems, specifically compliance with DO-311A.
- Familiarity with CAD software, preferably NX, but also Solidworks, CATIA, etc.
Pay
The expected pay range for this role is $235,000 - $294,000 per year. The starting base salary varies based on factors such as geographical location and relevant job-related experience.
