Diesel Truck Mechanic

About the role

This skilled position focuses on troubleshooting and repairing heavy-duty diesel engines, manual transmissions, electronic engine controls, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems. The successful candidate will maintain a fleet of dump trucks and trailers, interpret technical instructions, and support preventive maintenance to extend equipment service life. The role reports directly to the shop foreman.

Responsibilities

• Perform mechanical duties on various machinery and operating equipment
• Troubleshoot malfunctions, diagnose defects, and repair equipment
• Dismantle and reassemble equipment using proper tools
• Examine parts for damage or excessive wear
• Maintain records of time and parts used on appropriate forms
• Perform all levels of preventive maintenance services
• Identify repairs and document them on repair orders
• Use hand tools (screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges) and power tools (pneumatic wrenches, welding equipment, jacks, hoists)
• Perform routine maintenance: oil changes, battery checks, lubrication
• Adjust and replace brakes, tighten bolts and screws, reassemble equipment
• Inspect, test, and diagnose defective equipment using tools like motor analyzers, pressure gauges, and multimeters
• Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and safety devices
• Assist other maintenance staff to ensure operational efficiency
• Perform general cleaning of work areas
• Handle last-minute schedule changes, location changes, and shift adjustments
• Work overtime as required
• Weld and use torches (willingness to learn is acceptable)
• Complete other projects and tasks assigned by the supervisor

Requirements

• High school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent experience (preferred)
• Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work weekends and extended hours
• Must provide own tools up to ¾” sizes
• Proficiency with shop tools and ownership of a mechanic set
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
• Basic math skills
• CDL Class A self-certified non-excepted interstate and current DOT physical card required within the first 90 days of employment
• Class A CDL with air brake certification preferred but not required
• Vocational/technical school or certification preferred but not required based on experience
• Flexibility to work day or night shifts as needed for field repairs and preventive maintenance
• Initiative to assist with other positions for job completion
• Courteous and professional manner with coworkers, customers, and the public

Pay

$21 - $24 per hour
