Diesel Mechanic
About the role
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) seeks a Diesel Mechanic to join their team. This role is located within the Evansville Sub-District and offers a competitive total compensation package, including a pay rate starting at $24.26 per hour, with potential additional compensation for a CDL and endorsements.
Responsibilities
- Rebuild, replace, and/or repair major parts on cars and light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment (e.g., exhaust system, fuel injection, electrical systems, transmission, drive train, mechanical and air suspension, charging systems, air, and hydraulic brakes).
- Perform minor repairs or other related mechanical work (e.g., adjusts valves; changes and repairs all types of tires; cleans or replaces diesel injectors; repairs or replaces hydraulic components).
- Install snowplow blades and make repairs on damaged plow assemblies.
- Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed on equipment and orders and/or pick up parts.
- Service and repair of highway equipment in the field; use welding equipment to straighten and fabricate metal.
- Recognize performance issues for both gas and diesel engines and properly diagnose them.
- Inspect vehicles/equipment for damage.
- Perform winter operations duties including snow and ice removal.
- Operate snowplow, tow truck, or other equipment; repair mowers and sharpen blades; pump gasoline and diesel fuel and maintain daily records of same.
- Provide service and repair of vehicles and equipment on an emergency basis.
- Coordinate work assigned by the Shop Foreman and report problems as needed.
Requirements
- Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment.
- Thorough knowledge of automobile functions, systems, and repairs.
- Thorough knowledge of and ability to instruct others in the use of diagnostic equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of appropriate safety precautions.
- Ability to understand the system of mechanical procedures.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 1+ years of experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role.
- A High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) diploma is preferred.

- Ability to instruct others in the use of diagnostic equipment.

Pay
This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $24.26 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Mechanic Positions Candidates with a current CDL and endorsements required by the district, will earn an additional $1 per hour. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL and endorsements required by the district and will then earn an additional $1 per hour. CDL training provided onsite by certified INDOT staff.
