About the role
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) seeks candidates for various Mechanic positions within the Tipton Sub-District. These roles offer a competitive total compensation package, including a pay rate that typically starts at $24.26 per hour but may be adjusted based on experience and qualifications.
Responsibilities
- Rebuild, replace, and/or repair major parts on cars and light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment (e.g., exhaust system, fuel injection, electrical systems, transmission, drive train, mechanical and air suspension, charging systems, air, and hydraulic brakes).
- Perform minor repairs or other related mechanical work (e.g., adjusts valves; changes and repairs all types of tires; cleans or replaces diesel injectors; repairs or replaces hydraulic components).
- Install snowplow blades and make repairs on damaged plow assemblies.
- Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed on equipment and orders and/or pick up parts.
- Service and repair of highway equipment in the field; use welding equipment to straighten and fabricate metal.
- Recognize performance issues for both gas and diesel engines and properly diagnose them.
- Inspect vehicles/equipment for damage.
- Perform winter operations duties including snow and ice removal.
- Operate snowplow, tow truck, or other equipment; repair mowers and sharpen blades; pump gasoline and diesel fuel and maintain daily records of same.
- Provide service and repair of vehicles and equipment on an emergency basis.
- Coordinate work assigned by the Shop Foreman and report problems as needed.
Requirements
- Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment.
- Thorough knowledge of automobile functions, systems, and repairs.
- Thorough knowledge of and ability to instruct others in the use of diagnostic equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of appropriate safety precautions.
- Ability to understand the system of mechanical procedures.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 1+ years of experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role.
- A High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) diploma is preferred.
Skills
- Knowledge of automobile functions, systems, and repairs.
- Ability to instruct others in the use of diagnostic equipment.
- Appropriate safety precautions.
- Understanding of mechanical procedures.

Pay and Schedule
- Pay Rate: Typically starts at $24.26 per hour, may be commensurate with education and work experience.
- Standard Hand Tool Reimbursement: Up to $1500 per year for the purchase, replacement, and repair of tools required for maintenance and repair activities related to INDOT’s fleet of transportation vehicles, snow and ice management equipment, road maintenance equipment, and all other fleet items.
