About the role

This role supports the maintenance and repair of vehicles, equipment, and tools that keep transportation operations running safely and efficiently. It provides structured training that prepares you to perform mechanical diagnostics, repairs, and preventative maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Equipment Repair: Assist with repairing cars, trucks, and heavy equipment by replacing parts and performing needed adjustments
  • Preventative Maintenance: Complete routine service tasks that help equipment operate safely and reduce wear
  • Diagnostics Work: Identify mechanical problems using proper tools, techniques, and inspection methods
  • Safety Practices: Follow safety procedures, use protective equipment, and help maintain a clean and safe work area
  • Field Adjustments: Perform basic onsite adjustments to ensure equipment operates correctly during use
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate equipment records and document repair findings in written and oral form

Qualifications

  • Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: Two years as a Tradesman Helper (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) working in the automotive field; or Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Special Requirements: Active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit or License on the first day of employment. Active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment. Valid Pennsylvania Class 1, 4, or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period. Pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period. Active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period.
  • Additional Requirements: Operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission. Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations. Must be able to perform essential job functions.
