About the role
This position supports the maintenance and repair of diesel and construction equipment through structured, on-the-job training. The role builds mechanical knowledge and practical skills needed to service vehicles and machinery safely and effectively.
Responsibilities
- Equipment Repair: Assist with repairing and overhauling vehicles and heavy machinery components
- Preventative Maintenance: Participate in routine servicing, diagnostics, tune-ups, and system adjustments
- Inspection Support: Help complete safety and emissions inspections and related documentation
- Problem Identification: Use diagnostic tools to identify issues and recommend repair methods and parts
- Safety Practices: Maintain clean work areas, follow safety procedures, and support injury prevention measures
- Field Adjustments: Perform basic adjustments, minor repairs, and cleaning that support safe operation
Qualifications
- Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: Two years as a Tradesman Helper (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) working in the automotive field; or Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Special Requirements: Active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit or License on the first day of employment with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent. Active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment. Valid Pennsylvania Class 4 or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period. Pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period. Active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period.
- Additional Requirements: Operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission. Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations. Must be able to perform essential job functions.
