Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee

About the role

The Department of Transportation is seeking a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee who is ready to learn and take on new challenges. In this role you will gain hands‑on experience maintaining and repairing important equipment used across the county, supporting transportation operations daily and during emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Assist in repairing and overhauling cars, trucks, and heavy construction equipment.
• Participate in servicing vehicles and equipment through scheduled inspections and routine adjustments.
• Learn to identify mechanical and electrical problems and help determine appropriate repair methods.
• Support the completion of official safety and emissions inspections and help document related findings.
• Take part in making field repairs and adjustments that support safe operation and reduced equipment wear.
• Maintain equipment records and assist in completing reports based on observations and maintenance work.

Requirements

• Minimum Experience and Training: two years as a Tradesman Helper (or equivalent Federal Government job title), **or** graduation from an accredited post‑high‑school diesel technology curriculum, **or** an equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Special Requirements:
  • Active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake (L) and Manual Transmission (E) restrictions removed, or equivalent.
  • Active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • Obtain a valid Pennsylvania Class 1, 4, or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.
  • Pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
  • Active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N).
• Additional Requirements: ability to perform essential job functions.
• Legal Requirements: conditional offer of employment requires submission of criminal history reports, a medical examination, and drug screening.

Pay

Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin at a starting annual salary of $48,802 (before taxes).

Schedule

Full‑time position. Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch break. Schedule is subject to change based on weather/season. Telework is not available for this position.
