Principle Responsibilities

  • Assists pathologists in autopsy procedures.
  • Assists with the performance of eviscerations and post-eviscerations procedures.
  • Describes position and condition of internal organs, and condition of body fluids, and any other relevant observations to the pathologist.
  • Captures and documents relevant observations during the autopsy process.
  • Coordinates the receiving and releasing of bodies.
  • Labels and stores gross tissues collected during the performance of postmortem examinations.
  • Collects and records specimen information.
  • Weighs organs and records results.
  • Aseptically collects specimens for cultures.
  • Measures body fluids and records results.
  • Transports organs and takes photographs as directed.
  • Prepares body and supplies.
  • Identifies and prepares body prior to beginning autopsy.
  • Prepares instruments and supplies according to autopsy type.
  • Tracks instruments (scissors, hemostats, blades, knives, forceps, etc.) throughout procedure.
  • Maintains a safe clean working area in the morgue.
  • Stocks all necessary supplies including personal protective equipment.
  • Cleans and disinfects autopsy area and items used according to current infection control policy.
  • Keeps knives sharp and bone saw clean.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Education and/or experience needed to meet required functional competencies as listed on the job description.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 0 to 2 years experience in anatomic procedures or 2 to 5 years experience in a large hospital pathology lab.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a science related field.

Physical Demands

  • Heavy Work: Lifting weight up to 100 lbs. occasionally, up to 50 lbs. frequently.
  • Casual position with on-call requirements.
  • Day Shift.
  • No weekends.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $35.61 to $48.81 per hour.
