About the role

Join Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Hospital, a Magnet Hospital awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and provide stellar patient care using state-of-the-art ultrasound imaging technology. As a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, you will operate ultrasound equipment to capture high-quality images, ensuring patient safety and comfort while assisting physicians in diagnosing and assessing medical conditions.

Schedule

This role involves three 12-hour shifts with rotating day and night schedules between 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. – 1:30 a.m. On-call rotation is one shift per week, with weekend call rotation occurring once every 5–6 weeks.

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic sonographic imaging using non-ionizing, high-frequency sound waves for patients of all ages.
  • Conduct ultrasound studies (e.g., obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric, and vascular).
  • Consult with referring physicians regarding patients' medical history and select appropriate procedures and equipment.
  • Review patient charts, previous reports, and requisitions prior to exams.
  • Educate patients about procedures, equipment, and exams to ensure understanding and cooperation.
  • Ensure patient comfort and safety during and after exams.
  • Assist with scheduling patients, including emergency cases, and monitor daily ultrasound appointments.
  • Perform preliminary research on patients when preparations are not provided and prioritize based on schedules.
  • Acquire, archive, transmit, and print images via PACS; complete after-hours transmission of images and paperwork.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to the help desk and PACS Administrator.
  • Process billing via RIS and ensure proper function of ultrasound equipment.
  • Supply exam rooms with linen and related medical supplies.
  • Assist with clinical instruction of ultrasound students, residents, and in-service education for caregivers.
  • Orient new caregivers to equipment, department procedures, and scanning protocols.
  • Demonstrate ultrasound equipment for caregivers and visitors.
  • Potentially rotate through all diagnostic imaging modalities, sites, and/or locations.
  • Assist in new investigative techniques, procedures, and equipment.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the field through self-education and conference attendance.
  • If working within the Imaging Institute, perform non-invasive vascular studies (e.g., veins, arteries, pulse volume readings) and assist physicians during invasive studies.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and in good standing.
  • Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) through ARDMS or ARRT RT(S) or RT(VS) upon hire.
  • One certification within abdominal (RDMS, AB), OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN), or vascular (RVT, VT) through ARDMS upon hire; remaining two certifications must be obtained within 18 months.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.

Physical Requirements

  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift or assist with lifting patients of varying weight and manipulate equipment daily.

Personal Protective Equipment

Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Pay

Pay range for new hires: $35.25 – $53.00 per hour. Actual compensation will be determined based on work history, experience, skill set, and education. This range does not include shift differentials, overtime, or the value of Cleveland Clinic’s benefits package (e.g., healthcare, dental, vision, retirement contributions).

Benefits

This position is eligible for a sign-on bonus of up to $5,000.
