Diagnostic Imaging Technologist-Mammography I-Per Diem

About the Role

Under general supervision, operates dedicated and specialized mammography radiographic equipment; formulates and calculates techniques and positions patients to produce diagnostic images of normal and abnormal human breast and associated tissue and related unusual changes for use by physicians in making medical diagnoses. Uses independent judgment within established scope of practice to critique radiographs and images, recognize normal from abnormal tissue, and take additional required views such as magnification.

Responsibilities

• Operates dedicated and complex mammography equipment in a patient care setting to obtain definitive diagnoses for positive findings on a mammogram.
• Selects correct technical factors relative to the study requirements, patient’s age, body habitus, and pathology.
• Consistently processes radiographic images properly using automated equipment and critiques images to make necessary adjustments in technical factors or patient positioning.
• Demonstrates knowledge of and consistently uses proper sterile and infection control techniques.
• Conducts patient interviews to attain a full understanding of the procedure and obtain patient consent.
• Assists with orientation and training of students and other Radiologic Technologists in positioning, compression, exposure factors, film processing, and quality assurance/control.
• Accurately positions patients for mammography images, including those with implants, considering body habitus and lesion location.
• Utilizes precise positioning techniques for additional or special views such as magnification and compression relative to the patient’s condition or image findings.
• Maintains comprehensive knowledge of and performs required mammography Quality Control (Q.C.) according to State of California and Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) requirements.
• Observes Regional and department safety policies.
• Assesses and interprets patient data reflective of their status, adjusting care relative to age-specific needs.
• Modifies technical factors and patient positioning techniques based on the patient’s physical and cognitive abilities, ensuring minimal discomfort.
• Exercises clinical judgment within scope of practice, consulting with radiologists or clinicians to clarify orders or questionable images.
• Produces high-quality diagnostic images free from artifacts, demonstrating the area of interest with optimal contrast/exposure to differentiate normal and abnormal tissue.
• Documents clinical activities accurately and timely, maintaining records as required by ACR, MQSA, and the State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
• May perform routine radiographic examinations as needed.

Requirements

• Minimum 1 year of recent experience (within the last 12 months) as a Radiologic Technologist, including performance of routine mammographic examinations/procedures in an acute care medical center, outpatient breast center, or other FDA-certified facility. May substitute with 1 year of recent mammographic experience and verifiable equivalent training in affiliated approved schools.
• Certified Radiologic Technologist - Mammography Certificate (California).
• Radiologic Technologist Certificate (California).
• Basic Life Support certification.
• Radiologic Technologist Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
• Ability to demonstrate and apply knowledge of radiologic and mammographic techniques, breast structures, anatomy, composition, and pathology.
• Demonstrated ability to perform Quality Control/Assurance functions as specified by the State of California and MQSA.
• Maintains compliance with organizational, state, and federal regulations regarding mammographic examinations and Continuing Education (CEs).
• Demonstrated ability to perform all Q.C. functions, including phantom testing, daily QC, repeat analysis, compression check, and screen-film contact.

Preferred Qualifications

• Evidence of passing the advanced certification examination in Mammography issued by the ARRT (M).
• 3-5 years of experience in X-ray.
• Ability to perform AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) in all interactions with staff, physicians, and members.

Schedule

• Per Diem position.
• Shift: Day (08:30 AM – 05:30 PM).
• Workdays: Sunday through Saturday, including alternating Saturday and Sunday shifts.

Pay

$71.75 - $77.6 per hour. Kaiser Permanente strives to offer a market-competitive total rewards package and is committed to pay equity and transparency. The posted pay range is based on possible base salaries for the role and does not reflect the full value of the total rewards package. Actual base pay will be determined at offer based on labor market data, internal alignment, and a candidate’s relevant work experience, education, certifications, skills, and geographic location.

Location

• Primary Location: West Los Angeles Medical Center, Los Angeles, California.
• Travel: Yes, 25% of the time to cover Medical Office Buildings (MOBs) under the West LA service area.
• Work Setting: Onsite. Worker location must align with Kaiser Permanente’s Authorized States policy.
