Non-Exempt position responsible for coaching student-athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition while providing the best possible education for each student-athlete.
Responsibilities
- Develop drill and practice activities that teach and enhance individual and team skill development.
- Apply knowledge of sport rules and strategies.
- Assist in checking out, maintaining, and checking in equipment.
- Plan and enforce appropriate safety and health rules and regulations.
- Assist in supervision plans to ensure the safety and welfare of students at all times, including locker rooms, trips, and practices.
- Maintain confidentiality about students and others.
- Communicate professionally with players, parents, supervisors, peers, and spectators.
- Model and demonstrate activities and equipment used to develop basic skills or physical condition.
- Observe, diagnose, and prescribe appropriate remediation activities during practice and game conditions.
- Apply developmental stages of the game to the needs and ability levels of the team and players.
- Assimilate innovations and adapt to changes when applicable.
- Assist in teaching the fundamental philosophy for the activity or sport.
- Analyze and evaluate sports effectiveness.
- Assist in providing and enforcing training rules and expectations.
- Manage public relations with all audiences at all times.
- Support the philosophies of Derby Public Schools and Derby High School activities.
- May supervise students on out-of-town activities, including overnight stays and driving a district vehicle.
- Assist in developing and maintaining an inventory list of equipment.
- Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
- Stay abreast of new information, innovative ideas, and techniques.
- Comply with legal and regulatory requirements of governmental agencies and Board of Education policies.
- Perform all duties required by state and federal statutes.
- Maintain proper communication with middle school coaches to ensure a 7-12 philosophy is implemented.
- Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal and District Athletic/Activities Director.
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods.
- Ability to physically and manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
- Ability to stoop, bend, and reach.
- Ability to work in noisy and crowded environments.
- Ability to sit on a bus for extended periods of time.
- Ability to carry and/or provide aid to an injured player.
- Ability to coach in a variety of temperatures, humidity levels, and weather conditions.
- Ability to handle both emotional and physical stress.
- Ability to work long and irregular hours.
- Occupationally exposed to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials.
- Ability to lift equipment necessary for the sport.
- Ability to run practice without fatiguing.
- Ability to demonstrate agility drills, stretching exercises, and sport-specific activities.
- For Swimming and Diving: Ability to perform a water rescue.
- For Cross Country: Ability to jog or ride a bike at least five miles.
