About the role

The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) - Southbury Training School currently has ten (10) full-time, seasonal job opportunities for a Developmental Services Worker 1 to join our team at Southbury Training School in Southbury, CT.

These positions are responsible for providing necessary support and assistance in the overall operation and program activities at Southbury Training School.

Responsibilities

  • Provides assistance and instruction to individuals in activities of daily living;
  • Participates in therapeutic programs for development of individuals capabilities;
  • Provides guidance and instruction to individuals in development of desirable personal habits, hygiene and social relationships;
  • Implements individual program plans;
  • Participates in preparation, serving and feeding of meals;
  • Performs housekeeping duties necessary to maintain a clean and healthy environment;
  • Participates in social and recreational activities;
  • Reinforces appropriate individual behavior through modification techniques;
  • May administer selected oral medications with appropriate training;
  • Performs related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old as of May 16, 2026;
  • Applicants must be able to work for the full season and must complete all required DDS training;
  • Incumbent must possess and retain a valid Red Cross Waterfront Life Guard certification which includes certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid;
  • Must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle license;
  • Incumbent must be able to perform emergency first aid as needed;
  • All certifications must be valid from the beginning to the end of the working period;
  • Incumbents must successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam.

Qualifications

  • Considerable interpersonal skills;
  • Oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to develop a positive relationship with individuals;
  • Train individuals in self care habits, personal hygiene and proper social conduct;
  • Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Skills

  • Experience working or volunteering with people with disabilities;
  • Experience working in a camp, park, or other recreational setting;
  • Experience working in a location that does not have 24 hour nursing care;
  • Bilingual or fluency in American Sign Language;
  • Valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions;
  • Physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties;
  • Lift and restrain individuals;
  • Significant exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals;
  • Exposure to strongly disagreeable conditions.

  • PCN 141969 â Cottage 7A (Second Shift) Tuesday-Saturday: 2:30pm â 9:30pm; Regular Days Off: Sunday & Monday
  • PCN 141984 â Cottage 20 (First Shift) Tuesday - Saturday: 6:30am â 1:30pm; Regular Days Off: Sunday & Monday
  • PCN 141987 â Cottage 20 (Second Shift) Tuesday - Saturday: 2:30pm â 9:30pm; Regular Days Off: Sunday & Monday
  • PCN 142002 â Cottage 40 (First Shift) Tuesday - Saturday: 6:30am â 1:30pm; Regular Days Off: Sunday & Monday
  • PCN 142003 â Cottage 40 (Second Shift) Sunday - Thursday: 2:30pm â 9:30pm; Regular Days Off: Friday & Saturday
  • PCN 141986 â Cottage 41 (First Shift) Sunday - Thursday: 6:30am â 1:30pm; Regular Days Off: Friday & Saturday
  • PCN 141992 â Cottage 41 (Frist Shift) Tuesday - Saturday: 6:30am â 1:30pm; Regular Days Off: Sunday & Monday
  • PCN 141997 â Cottage 41 (Second Shift) Sunday - Thursday: 2:30pm â 9:30pm; Regular Days Off: Friday & Saturday
  • PCN 142004 â Cottage 42 (Second Shift) Tuesday - Saturday: 2:30pm â 9:30pm; Regular Days Off: Sunday & Monday
  • Qualifications
