Development Writer
About the role
The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is one of the world’s leading biomedical research institutes. The Development Writer will join a nimble, fast-paced, and dynamic team, crafting content that communicates scientific concepts to donor audiences. This position reports to the Manager and Senior Editor, Development Communications, and collaborates closely with the Development Communications team and frontline fundraisers.
Responsibilities
- Produce clear, accurate, compelling, and donor-centered copy, translating complex scientific concepts into lay language while aligning with the Institute’s priorities and messaging.
- Draft gift acknowledgements and other correspondence on behalf of the Chief Development Officer, senior fundraisers, Broad principal investigators, and other senior leaders.
- Draft stewardship reports that convey scientific progress and impact, with guidance from fundraisers and the Development Communications team.
- Draft and edit materials for Development activities, including prospect visits and events (e.g., biographies, invitations, post-event correspondence).
- Manage multiple writing assignments simultaneously by tracking drafts, revisions, approvals, and deadlines while maintaining organized records.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, journalism, or life sciences. An advanced degree is a bonus.
- 4+ years of professional writing experience, preferably in development, nonprofit, higher education, or science communications.
- Exceptional written, expository, and verbal communication skills. Copy editing and proofreading skills are a plus.
- Keen editorial judgment with regard to clarity, concision, and precision.
- Enthusiasm for and familiarity with the scientific research and accomplishments of the Broad Institute. Acquaintance with the broader Boston biomedical ecosystem is ideal.
- Ability to work independently, complete complex assignments, conduct research, and fact-check for accuracy.
- Ability to think and work across different subject areas simultaneously at a high level.
- Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively in a team.
- Proficiency with standard productivity tools (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Workspace).
- Discretion with confidential material is required.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment and work under deadline pressure.
The Broad will not provide sponsorship for this position.
Pay
The expected base pay range for this full-time (40 hours per week) position is $70,000–$94,000 per year. Actual compensation will vary based on factors such as relevant skills, experience, education, and qualifications.
