Development Director (Community Council of Idaho)
Status: Exempt, full-time, regular position reporting to the Chief Operating Officer.
About the Role
The Development Director leads and implements the organization’s fundraising strategy to ensure sustainable financial support for its mission. This role oversees all development activities, including major gifts, annual giving, grants, corporate sponsorships, and donor stewardship. The Development Director supervises the Grant Specialist, Communication Specialist, and Assistant Director of Community Relations/Marketing to align fundraising efforts with organizational messaging. The position is primarily focused on external development, gift and donor cultivation, with an expected goal of raising new dollars. Within four years, the position is anticipated to raise a minimum of four times the cost of the position and develop ongoing annual goals.
Responsibilities
- Development: Develop and execute a comprehensive development plan to meet annual revenue goals. Cultivate and maintain relationships with individual donors, foundations, and corporate partners. Identify new giving strategies and opportunities to diversify revenue streams.
- Grant Management: Oversee the Grant Specialist in researching, writing, and submitting grant proposals. Ensure compliance with grant requirements and timely reporting. Support the Grant Specialist in implementing a corporate-wide grant management system (currently Instrumental).
- Community Relations & Marketing: Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Community Relations/Marketing to create compelling donor communications and campaigns. Develop an integrated strategy using community relations activities for donor identification. Ensure consistent messaging across all development and fundraising materials.
- Communications: Provide strategic oversight of all development-related communications to align with fundraising priorities, donor cultivation goals, and organizational messaging. Direct communications activities as tools for donor identification, engagement, stewardship, and advancement. Supervise and evaluate the Communications Specialist to ensure high-quality, donor-focused communications and campaigns.
- Coordination of Functional Area: Define and document roles, deliverables, and performance expectations for direct reports (Communications, Grants, Events, Donor Relations). Align timelines, messaging, and fundraising strategies to support agency-wide initiatives. Translate CEO-defined priorities into coordinated annual and multi-year development and communications plans. Maintain team coordination through structured meetings, shared work plans, and performance reviews. Serve as the primary liaison between the Development & Communications unit and the Chief Executive Officer.
- Leadership & Team Management: Provide guidance, mentorship, and performance evaluations for supervised staff. Foster a collaborative and goal-oriented work environment.
- Data & Reporting: Maintain accurate donor records and generate reports for the Executive Director and Board. Analyze fundraising metrics to inform strategy and improve outcomes.
