Development Consultant (Heavy SQL/Vista)

About the role
The Development Consultant is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining software applications and database systems that meet the needs of the organization and clients. This role will formulate and design system scope and objectives, gather development requirements, and deliver data and database solutions. A primary focus of this position is advanced Microsoft SQL Server development and support of Vista by Trimble ERP environments, including reporting, integrations, performance optimization, and troubleshooting.
This role involves coding, testing, debugging, and ensuring the functionality and performance of applications and databases across various platforms. The Development Consultant will work within a collaborative team environment to create efficient, scalable, and user-friendly solutions. Additionally, the position includes supporting existing applications and databases, integrating new technologies, and adhering to industry best practices to improve application and database performance and user experience. This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
Responsibilities
- Gather requirements and prepare detailed specifications from which solutions will be developed.
- Design, code, test, debug, and optimize complex database and SQL solutions utilizing Microsoft SQL Server and T-SQL.
- Develop and maintain advanced stored procedures, triggers, views, functions, and ad hoc queries.
- Analyze and troubleshoot SQL performance issues, query optimization opportunities, and database integrity concerns.
- Develop, maintain, and support custom solutions, reporting, integrations, and data workflows within Vista by Trimble ERP.
- Work consistently at the highest technical level on all phases of a project.
- Communicate on projects interdepartmentally to confirm business processes and requirements.
- Interact directly with clients of all technical knowledge levels and at all levels of their organization.
- Design, develop, and maintain software applications based on client requirements and business needs.
- Write clean, scalable, and efficient code using technologies such as T-SQL, Java, Python, C#, JavaScript, or Swift.
- Develop front-end and back-end solutions for web, mobile, or Windows desktop applications.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams including project managers, consultants, and other developers to ensure successful project delivery.
- Participate in regular meetings to gather requirements, discuss progress, and identify challenges.
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior developers when needed.
- Conduct thorough testing of applications and databases to ensure high performance, security, and reliability.
- Troubleshoot and resolve bugs, data issues, and application defects throughout the development lifecycle.
- Implement unit tests and participate in code reviews.
- Stay current on industry best practices, emerging technologies, and programming languages.
- Recommend and implement improvements to development processes, architecture, and tools.
- Document application and database architecture, code, integrations, and system changes.
- Create user manuals and other documentation to assist clients and end users.
- Provide ongoing maintenance, support, and updates for existing applications and databases.
- Ensure applications and databases remain compatible with updated platforms and operating systems.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of five (5) years of hands-on SQL development experience in Microsoft SQL Server environments.
- Advanced Microsoft SQL Server and T-SQL knowledge required, including stored procedures, triggers, views, functions, query optimization, performance tuning, and complex reporting.
- Experience developing and supporting data-driven solutions utilizing SQL for reporting, integrations, and business applications.
- Experience supporting, developing, reporting from, or integrating with Vista by Trimble ERP is required.
- Strong understanding of Vista by Trimble database structures, business processes, reporting, and integrations.
- Experience in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry preferred.
- Experience with Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and SQL Server administration concepts.
- Experience with SAP Crystal Reports, SSRS, SSAS, SSIS, and Microsoft BI Services preferred.
- Familiarity with cloud platform services such as AWS and Microsoft Azure.
- Proven experience as an Application Developer, Database Developer, ERP Developer, or similar role, with a portfolio of developed solutions.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as C#, Java, Python, JavaScript, or similar technologies.
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC), Agile methodologies, and version control systems such as Azure DevOps and Git.
- Familiarity with front-end frameworks (React, Angular, or Vue.js) and back-end technologies (.NET, Node.js, etc.).
- Knowledge of mobile development (iOS/Android) is a plus.
- Excellent problem-solving, debugging, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Current state-issued driver's license, clean driving record, reliable transportation, and proof of valid auto insurance.
Skills
- Knowledge of Oracle PL/SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or IBM DB2
- Microsoft Power Platform (Power BI, Power Automate, Power Apps)
- SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) experience
- Crystal Reports development experience
- SSH and PowerShell scripting experience
- Experience supporting ERP implementations, upgrades, and data migrations
Schedule
Standard office hours for this role are Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm local time zone. This is a full-time, exempt role. This is a remote role with eligibility to work from approved states in the United States.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods and use a computer and keyboard for long durations.
- Frequent typing and use of a mouse, with fine motor skills required for accurate data entry and navigation.
- Must be able to maintain good posture and adjust seating and workstation to minimize physical strain.
