About the role

The C&O Canal Trust seeks a Development Associate to join a passionate team dedicated to preserving and enhancing the park's resources. The position provides hands-on experience in all aspects of the development process, focusing on administrative tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a working knowledge of eTapestry and/or related CRMs, ensuring accurate and timely data entry.
  • Assist with maintaining and monitoring data integrity, generating reports, and providing analysis for monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Process and track gifts and gift acknowledgments as assigned based on Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Research grant opportunities, assist with grant proposal writing and preparation, and provide support for the annual Development Operating Plan and grant proposal cycles.
  • Provide administrative support for Development Team outreach initiatives, including events and sponsorship solicitations, annual appeals, and bulk mailings.
  • Assist with coordinating the Bench Donation Program, including record-keeping, tracking donor engagement, communicating with vendors, and supporting the NPS team in identifying potential site locations.
  • Support special event planning for Park After Dark and other outreach activities.
  • Assist with organization-wide duties and major events.
  • Occasional weekend and evening work may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional administrative experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Demonstrated online research experience.
  • Demonstrated creative and technical writing experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
  • CRM database experience is preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Flexible and self-motivated, able to work both independently and as part of a team in a hybrid environment.
  • Personal qualities of integrity and credibility.
  • Commitment to the mission of the C&O Canal Trust and to supporting public lands and community engagement.
  • Genuine interest in pursuing a career in nonprofit fundraising.

Physical Demands and Safety

Most work is performed in an indoor office environment. Outside activities will occur with conditions varying by location and environment. Must be able to operate normal office equipment and be proficient with Google Workspace and donor management software.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary range: $40,000 to $42,000 based on experience and responsibilities.
  • Benefits package includes partial telework, 100% employer-paid health insurance premiums, vacation, sick, and personal leave, paid holidays, a Simple IRA retirement program with an employer match, and mileage reimbursement.
