Nature of Work
Under general supervision, the purpose of this position is to perform security work within the Department of Detention. Work involves controlling access to and within the detention facility/housing unit of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. Employees coordinate and document all movement within the detention facility/housing unit on an assigned shift. Position monitors closed circuit television cameras, telephones, alarm systems, intercom panels and/or control panel doors. Work involves maintaining strict adherence to rules and regulations and safety/security procedures. Work assignments and instructions are received from an administrative superior who reviews work methods and results through observation, reports and conferences. Performs related work as directed.
Essential Functions/Physical Requirements
- Ensures the proper operation of all electronic functioning doors, security devices/alarms; controls access to and within the detention facility/housing unit.
- Allots alerts certified personnel to conditions or circumstances which may inhibit the efficient operations of the facility; provides recommendations for resolution as appropriate.
- Maintains strict adherence to rules and regulations and safety/security procedures.
- Maintains visual and verbal contact with the housing unit Deputy to ensure safety and security.
- Monitors safety of deputies, visitors, and inmates.
- Serves as a communications liaison in the event of an emergency in the detention facility/housing unit.
- Communicate with inmates in housing units via the intercom system to direct, advise and provide verbal commands to assist deputies maintain order and ensure compliance with facility rules and regulations.
- Uses a computer terminal for data input and retrieval of various inmate information, as applicable to assigned functional area.
Work Shifts
- Employees must have the ability to work any shift and engage in flexible work assignments that can include voluntary and/or mandatory overtime to meet agency needs.
