Essential Job Functions
- Conduct a head count, ensuring visual confirmation of inmate presence.
- Note all activities, emergencies, inmate movements, video visitation, recreation, programs, and incident reports in the JMS.
- Supervise the distribution of inmate meals and exercise control over trays, utensils, and cups/cup/milk cartons.
- Ensure proper recreation of inmates according to established policy and procedures.
- Escort and standby with medical personnel for medication distribution and emergency situations.
- Control and use security keys or equipment assigned.
- Maintain cleanliness of the housing unit.
- Issue razors to inmates at designated times, following procedures.
- Collect outgoing mail, verify names and addresses, and screen mail according to FMJS and Detention Directives.
- Deliver mail to the control center or mailroom.
- Conduct random and periodic searches for contraband, weapons, and prohibited items.
- Pat down and/or search inmates leaving or returning to the housing unit.
- Be proficient in using radio, telephone, intercom system, and emergency alarm system.
- Perform additional duties as directed.
Training and Experience
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid State of Florida driver license.
- At least 18 years old, U.S. citizen, and of good moral character.
- Passed the Florida Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (FBAT/CJBAT) within the last four years.
- Quickly analyze situations and determine proper actions.
- Interview and observe to obtain information.
- Cope firmly, courteously, tactfully, and respectfully.
- Prepare clear and concise reports.
- Follow and understand instructions and communicate effectively.
- Operate radio equipment and adhere to radio communication rules.
- React quickly and calmly under emergency conditions.
- Knowledge of relevant laws, rules, and procedures.
- Knowledge of the Hernando County Detention Center and its demographics.
- Knowledge of Sheriff's Office Policies and Procedures.
- Above-average physical condition and ability to control inmates.
- 20/20 vision (corrected).
- Ability to crawl ten yards.
- Ability to drag, lift, or carry 150 pounds 25 feet.
- Ability to run 100 yards unassisted.
- Ability to handle verbal assaults.
- Ability to walk unassisted.
- Normal hearing (language level).
- Manual dexterity.
- Normal color perception.
Pay
Starting Salary: $49,000.00
