About the role
The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is seeking a Designer Structures to join our Engineering Department. As a Safety Sensitive position, this role involves performing design tasks for railroad structures such as stations, bridges, and retaining walls.
Responsibilities
- Perform all assigned design tasks as required to meet work objectives.
- Participate in design projects from inception to completion, including field investigations and coordination with field forces.
- Contribute to the development of plans and specifications, providing calculations, analysis, and drafting evaluations.
- Represent the goals and interests of the LIRR and Engineering Department during design and project meetings.
- Participate in overtime assignments, including emergency response, special programs, and fast track projects.
- Supply input for the development of schedules and budget parameters.
- Ensure timely completion of assigned tasks.
- Lead Construction Phase Services to ensure successful project completion.
- Review shop drawings and conduct periodic field visits to confirm compliance with design intent and requirements.
- Maintain and develop professional and technical knowledge, including preparation for the NYS Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination and/or the NY Intern Engineer Certification.
- Promote a diverse workforce and maintain professional relationships.
- Ensure a safe working environment and adhere to company safety policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience and education.
- At least 2 years of experience in Design development, including preparation of civil/structural CAD drawings, structural calculations, specifications, and other design documents.
- Relevant experience working with engineering consultants, contractors, and/or State/City Agencies.
- Strong knowledge of engineering principles and practices as applied to civil and structural engineering.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to work with a diverse team of stakeholders.
- Effective organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Civil/Structural Engineering or equivalent design and/or construction field of Engineering.
- Strong computer skills, including use of structural analysis software and AutoCAD drafting.
- Ability to work independently and lead tasks to completion.
- A valid drivers license.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of railway engineering, including familiarity with LIRR and Engineering Department operations, work practices, and policies.
- Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) and/or NY Intern Engineer certification preferred.
Skills
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
- Proficiency in Civil/Structural Engineering software.
- Experience with AutoCAD drafting.

Pay
$47.96 per hour, with wage progression based on performance and experience.
