About the Role

This position involves leading larger teams of designers and coordinating day-to-day workflows for advanced piping design and equipment layouts in petrochemical, refining, pharmaceutical, confectionary/food processing, or power plant construction projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate teams of designers in daily workflows.
  • Complete advanced and complex piping design and equipment layouts using 2D CAD, 3D E3D software, or other 3D design tools in accordance with industry practices.
  • Review new proposals/RFQs and prepare estimates for small capital projects.
  • Mark up and coordinate vendor document reviews for major and minor equipment, including managing logistics of the review process.
  • Apply advanced understanding of standard instrument design, installation requirements, and technology differences to navigate design and installation challenges without supervision.
  • Demonstrate advanced field constructability knowledge and fabrication methods to serve as a qualified checker for small to medium complexity jobs.
  • Create and review detailed project schedules, ensuring coordination with piping workflow expectations, durations, and interdisciplinary interactions.
  • Facilitate model reviews, including collecting and managing comments.
  • Track project hours, progress reporting, and conduct earned value analysis to forecast project completion dates accurately.
  • Identify scope of work from initial exposure and create project change notices for deviations.
  • Manage global and domestic workshare initiatives.
  • Work with laser scanning technology and integrate laser scans into 3D models.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or associate degree with drafting courses; bachelor’s degree preferred with design experience.
  • 20+ years of experience in design requirements for petrochemical, refining, pharmaceutical, confectionary/food processing, or power plant construction projects.
  • Serve as a qualified expert capable of making key technical decisions on low to medium complexity projects.
  • Advanced ability to communicate information and ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Advanced knowledge of FEL/FEED project execution staged gate processes, including differences between early FEL/FEED and detailed design execution.
  • Detailed understanding of precursor/successor activities, deliverables, project milestones, and expected progress for key deliverables at each phase.
  • Advanced understanding of overall project execution and multi-discipline workflows, particularly interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Ability to recognize project changes and apply basic change management procedures, conveying changes to project leads.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree.
  • Certificate in design/drafting.

Physical Demands

  • Communicate in person, via telephone, and email.
  • Use arm/hand steadiness, manual dexterity, finger dexterity, multi-limb coordination, oral expression, and comprehension.
  • May be required to lift, carry, and move objects safely.

Work Environment

  • Primarily in a general office environment with a fast-paced work setting.
  • Occasional work in industrial locations with moderate to high noise levels.
  • Job sites may include light to heavy equipment vehicles, materials, communication tools, and people standing, walking, sitting, signaling, or talking.
  • Noise levels may vary and include bells, whistles, and alarms.
