About the role

HP’s User Research Team in Design, within Personal Systems (PS), is focused on delivering seamless, meaningful experiences for our customers. We are seeking a passionate and experienced Design Researcher with a strategic mindset to lead generative and evaluative user research efforts for internal stakeholders and teams. In this collaborative and agile environment, you will play a critical role in understanding user needs, behaviors, and motivations, developing continuous learning loops using design thinking, and communicating research insights to inform strategic product decisions.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on researcher who thinks beyond individual studies, balancing desirability, viability, and feasibility to drive projects forward. You will proactively communicate priorities, progress, and key decisions while bringing adaptability, curiosity, and a servant-leadership mindset to strengthen the research practice.

Responsibilities

  • Quickly ramp up on the existing knowledge base and user landscape surrounding a specific project area.
  • Create strategic research plans to address questions and assumptions from a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • Design and execute research plans in learning loops, refining research questions and methodologies based on emerging findings.
  • Support, navigate, and facilitate relationships between internal stakeholder teams to arrive at aligned and traceable opportunities.
  • Lead rapid design thinking workshops and research activities to uncover user needs, pain points, and opportunities for innovation.
  • Conduct user research using various qualitative and quantitative methodologies, adapting creatively as needed.
  • Analyze research data and synthesize findings into actionable insights that inform product strategy, roadmap, and design decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including designers, product managers, and engineers, to translate research findings into tangible solutions.
  • Communicate research findings and insights effectively through presentations, reports, and documentation tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Build trust, empower others, and help teams succeed through a servant-leadership mindset.
  • Demonstrate empathy and a growth mindset to uphold team values and culture.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest UX research trends and methodologies.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in user research, with a strong focus on generative and foundational research, and the ability to work across the research continuum (generative to evaluative).
  • Design, research, and UX expertise—ability to think on multiple levels, from different stakeholder perspectives, and both backwards and forwards in time.
  • Proactive mindset, with the ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment while maintaining research quality and business considerations.
  • Proven experience conducting and analyzing user research using both traditional and AI-augmented methods.
  • Ability to translate user research insights into business-relevant guiding principles and opportunities, empowering teams with context and direction.
  • Strong understanding of design thinking principles and methodologies, with the ability to lead effective workshops.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to present research findings clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, including technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong desire to educate, empower, facilitate, and lead.
  • Excellent time management skills.
