We are seeking an early career Design Planner who is driven and takes pride in technical precision and production quality. The successful candidate will work on a variety of land development projects as part of a multi-disciplined design team that includes civil engineers, planners, transportation experts, surveyors and landscape architects. This is an in-office position based at our Tyson, Virginia office.
Requirements
- BA/BS in Planning (or a related field) preferred
- Knowledge of AutoCAD (Civil 3D preferred)
- Technical experience in AutoCAD (Civil 3D preferred); some experience with water, sewer, and general utility design; roadway, and related site design/layout including cross sections; basic understanding of grading principles; using and manipulating aerial and topographic map files; and preparing entitlement documents.
- Ability to research and analyze local zoning codes, land use regulations, and environmental laws and to apply them to assigned projects.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite (MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills
Responsibilities
- Planning Support: Assist Project Planners, Senior Project Planners, and Director of Planning in entry-level capacity, focusing on design and preparation of planning documents for assigned project development phases.
- Technical Development: Develop proficiency in planning software and GIS applications while gaining basic experience in land development, planning, and site design fundamentals.
- Project Coordination: Coordinate efforts with clients, agencies, VIKA multi-disciplinary teams, and consultants while building basic experience in preparing land development plans conforming to local jurisdiction requirements.
- Professional Growth: Build basic knowledge of local county approval processes and standards, develop proficiency in one jurisdiction, and establish foundation for advancement in planning practice.

Pay
The anticipated salary range for this position is $65,000 – $75,000. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors, in accordance with applicable law.
