About the role

This role supports the Area Design Manager in coordinating interfaces between existing design consultants, subsequent design and delivery contractors, rolling stock contractors, other contracting entity design packages, and stakeholders. The position ensures compliance and robust implementation of Interface Management processes throughout the project lifecycle, providing technical oversight for Interface Management and supporting technical assurance for various product and system Safety Cases and the eventual Project Safety Case.

The program offers the opportunity to work alongside industry-leading professionals on one of the most significant transportation infrastructure initiatives currently in development, enhancing connectivity and supporting regional growth.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical oversight and management of all Interface Management relevant Engineering activities to ensure they result in affordable solutions that meet program requirements in a safe and environmentally responsible manner for time, cost, and quality.
  • Ensure robust safety management processes are undertaken within design consultants and contractors, identifying risks in the design of the operational railway.
  • Support the specification and review of functions and characteristics of the operational railway, identifying system hazards and system assurance requirements.
  • Integrate and coordinate with various Engineering and Systems Engineering disciplines.
  • Ensure the definition and management of all interfaces (technical, functional, internal, and external) to meet Project Requirements.
  • Manage Interface meetings with design teams to:
    • Develop processes for interface management.
    • Ensure the Project’s Interface Management process is followed.
    • Facilitate the identification of interfaces by design consultants and contractors.
    • Facilitate the resolution of cross-boundary interface issues to meet project program requirements.
    • Monitor interface progress and closeout.
  • Provide support and guidance to assurance and engineering safety management activities.
  • Review interface status reports from interfacing designers for consistency, accuracy, and identification of issues and risks.
  • Ensure traceability and recording of agreements and changes.
  • Assist in maintaining consistency of Interface Control Documents and specifications by the design teams.
  • Provide inputs into the common Project risk register and participate in its regular review.
  • Support the System Assurance and Integration Manager in reviewing system assurance documentation to verify required system performance.
  • Assist the System Assurance and Integration Manager with the review and acceptance of design and delivery contractors' Safety Cases, considering safety arguments and evidence incrementally.
  • Support the Project’s Independent Safety Assessor’s (ISA) review and coordinate resolution and closure of observations raised.
  • Understand a live operational construction environment with significant safety hazards, including moving trains and Overhead Line Electrification.
  • Review contractor design submittals, technical submittals (including task briefs and work package plans), inspection and test plans, and handover plans relating to Interface Management.
  • Support liaison with the appointed ISA and Rail Operators.

Requirements

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in science or engineering from an accredited university or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in delivering rail projects.

Skills

  • Excellent knowledge across all areas of mechanical and civil designs, plus significant knowledge of rail systems.
  • Significant experience in engineering disciplines, ideally with involvement in design and construction projects across multidisciplinary areas.
  • Successful Interface Management track record on a major multidisciplinary rail project.
  • Thorough knowledge of discipline engineering techniques, engineered systems design, and engineering/design calculations.
  • Understanding of the principles of EN 50126 standard and knowledge of Common Safety Method.
  • Fully knowledgeable and conversant with relevant European, American, and international civil engineering and railway codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of Requirements Management and associated tools.
  • Broad knowledge of precedents in the rail industry.
  • Strong English language communication and report writing skills.
  • Ability to prepare clear strategic planning procedures and user-friendly templates.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Design Suite software programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, team-oriented with a knowledge-sharing approach.
  • Consultancy experience.
  • Ability to solve problems laterally and understand client and entity needs in a multidisciplinary context.
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team and manage challenging relationships across entities.
  • Self-driven with the ability to plan and execute work without direct supervision.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a demanding PMO environment, including travel and remote work as required.

Pay

Salary range: $180,200 – $231,000 annually (based on market data; final salary offered is determined by education, experience, and qualifications of the applicant).
