Design Engineer IV, Mechanical

Fluor’s Metals & Mining Material Handling division, VIRTA Inc., is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer IV to join our Denver, CO team. This role focuses on managing the technical execution of projects, both independently and under the direction of Senior Engineering, including packages and calculations.

Responsibilities

• Work with 2D and 3D design tools and lead/guide designer/drafters
• Support estimating for bids, securing estimates for engineering and equipment
• Contribute to the development of internal processes and tools, identifying areas for improvement and implementation
• Apply Competitive Execution techniques to develop cost-effective project solutions
• Develop and review specifications, including design criteria
• Participate in equipment and material procurement, permitting, and subcontracting activities
• Assign work to teams, monitor progress, and manage deliverables
• Perform and check calculations, specify equipment, and solve complex engineering problems
• Review vendor equipment documentation for compliance with project requirements and resolve discrepancies
• Analyze and recommend solutions to problems of varying complexity
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Accredited four-year degree or global equivalent in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) with a minimum of eight (8) years of work-related experience
• Ability to communicate effectively with management, coworkers, clients, vendors, contractors, and visitors
• Technical knowledge necessary to complete job-specific tasks
• Ability to learn and apply local, state/province, and federal/national statutes and guidelines
• Strong attention to detail and time-management skills
• Must be able to travel up to 25%, both international and domestic
• Proficient with Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) conveyor design standards
• Familiar with material handling system P&IDs and flowsheets
• Intermediate knowledge of Autodesk or related design tools
• Proficiency with belt conveyor analysis software such as Sidewinder, Beltstat, or Belt Analyst
• Experience in calculations and selection/specifications for material handling components (e.g., drive systems, belting, idlers, pulleys, dust collection, hydraulic systems)

Preferred Qualifications

• Ten (10) or more years of work experience
• Membership in a technical society, such as Professional Engineer (PE)
• Advanced knowledge of discipline codes and standards, commercial availability, and cost of materials
• Practical field experience
• Intermediate computer and software skills (e.g., word processing, email, spreadsheets, presentations)

Pay

Salary range: $108,000.00 – $201,000.00. The market rate for this role is typically at the mid-point of the range, with final salary determined by candidate qualifications, relevant experience, geographic location, internal pay equity, and prevailing market conditions.

Must be authorized to work in the country where the position is located. Background checks, including education, professional registration, employment, references, and Global Watchlist screening, are part of the conditional offer process.
