Design Engineer - Engineer Principal
About the role
The position supervises up to four engineering and paraprofessional staff in the MnDOT Metro Design Unit and serves as the project manager for all assigned projects. It provides technical leadership for the Metro District in design and project delivery, offering management direction, general supervision, and engineering guidance for producing layouts, final plans, and supporting documents. The position signs engineering documents as the engineer of record, including preliminary layouts, final plans, and specifications. It also ensures that all assigned projects are delivered on schedule and within budget and is responsible for developing and managing consultant contracts.
Responsibilities

- Offer management direction, general supervision, and engineering guidance
- Sign engineering documents as the engineer of record
- Ensure projects are delivered on schedule and within budget
- Develop and manage consultant contracts
Requirements
- Licensure as a professional Civil Engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design (AELSLAGID) or ability to obtain licensure through Comity (Reciprocity)
- Three years of post-registration engineering experience at the Engineer Senior level or equivalent performing scoping and designing of highway transportation projects
- Experience leading technical staff in the development and delivery of road-construction layouts, final plans, specifications, and cost estimates
Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing
- Human relations skills sufficient to work cooperatively with the public and other affected interests

Pay
$42.16 - $64.20 / hourly; $88,030 - $134,049 / annually
