About the role

The Space team in East Aurora, NY is seeking a Design Drafter to join their dynamic team. Reporting to the Drafting Supervisor, the successful candidate will work in an on-site, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with all functional disciplines to discuss design, drawing or fabrication requirements.
  • Lead the graphical evolution of new products from layout to drawings, ensuring correctness of proportion, arrangement of internal components, necessary dimensional information, and material/process suggestions.
  • Produce final drawings or 3D/Solid models independently or in conjunction with others using the Computer Aided Design (CAD) System.
  • Support Engineering, Sales, and Program Management for bid and proposal efforts by providing layouts and assemblies.
  • Organize and plan the number and types of drawings required to represent the design, exercising technical cognizance over Drafting personnel when assigned, checking detail drawings for completeness and accuracy, and providing general follow-through on product design.
  • Collaborate with project teams, participate in status review meetings, and provide estimates on level of effort.

Requirements

  • Associates Mechanical Technology or relevant major is required.
  • 3 years of drafting/design experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Possess a comprehensive knowledge of good drafting practices and techniques, machine shop practices, part fabrication methods, mathematics through descriptive geometry, dimensioning techniques, and geometric tolerancing.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical CAD (MCAD) tools is required. Proficiency with Siemens NX and/or Teamcenter PLM is preferred.
  • Possess above average design skills, strong creative and investigative skills, and be well structured and organized.
  • Familiarization of basic properties and strength of materials as well as stress and thermal effects is also required.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical hardware design for kinematic mechanisms and packaging them in customer defined envelopes.

Preferred Experience

  • Demonstrated leadership experience mentoring or guiding drafting personnel and leading small project efforts.
  • Working knowledge of aerospace drafting and design standards including ASME Y14.5, MIL-STD, and related specifications.
  • Experience operating within configuration-controlled environments, including ECO/ECR processes and PLM systems.
  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and tolerance analysis in precision aerospace applications.
  • Strong ability to collaborate cross-functionally and contribute to design reviews and technical decision-making.
  • Prior experience in aerospace, defense, or space systems environments.
  • Exposure to actuation systems, servo mechanisms, or precision motion control products.
  • Experience supporting environmental considerations (shock, vibration, thermal) in design layouts.
  • Familiarity with ITAR or export-controlled environments.

Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance.
